Theoretical predictions of wave growth by closure modelling have been hindered by the ambiguity about the interface conditions and the lack of knowledge of the dynamics of wave-turbulence interaction. The present experimental program was undertaken in an attempt to clarify the interface flow structure, as well as the closure relations, and to study the dynamic response of wave perturbations to the imposition of air modulations.

The research work of the collaborative research center SFB401 Flow Modulation and Fluid-Structure Interaction at Airplane Wings at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen, which is reported in this book, was pos sible due to the financial support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The proposal has been approved after evaluation by the referees of DFG selected from other universities and industry, which is gratefully acknowledged. The work is still in progress and now approved to continue until the end of year 2005. More than 50 scientists from universities of the United States, Russia, France, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and research orga nizations NASA, ONERA, NLR, DLR could be invited and have visited the research center, gave seminars on their research on related topics and some of them stayed longer for joined work. Besides its scientific value, also the importance of the pro gram for scientific educa tion becomes evident by looking at the numbers of completed theses, which are up to now about 15 doctoral theses, 40 diploma theses and 70 study theses. The authors of this book acknowledge the valuable support coming from all these persons and institutions. They are especially grateful to the referees having reviewed this work, A. Cohen (Universite Pierre et Marie Curie), J. Cooper (Manchester School of Engineering), W. Devenport (Virginia Tech.), M. Drela (MIT), F. Gern (Avionics Specialties Inc.), A. Expressions are derived for the dependence of the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the phase structure function (D sub phi) on the Kolmogorov turbulence parameters. In particular, it is demonstrated that certain measurements of the MTF and D sub phi can be interpreted in terms of an outer scale of turbulence being of the order 10-50 cm, values which typically can be expected under inversion conditions. A theoretical and experimental study of phenomena related to dense sprays is described. Two aspects of dense sprays are being considered: effects of turbulence modulation, which is the direct effect of particle (drop) motion on the turbulence properties of multiphase flows; and the structure and mixing properties of the dense-spray region of pressure atomized sprays. Turbulence modulation is being studied by considering spherical monodisperse glass particles falling in a stagnant water bath, where effects of turbulence modulation are responsible for the entire turbulence field. Measurements involve phase velocities and temporal and spatial correlations and spectra of the continuous phase velocities using a two-point phase-discriminating laser Doppler anemometer. Flow properties are being analyzed using stochastic methods: assuming linear superposition of randomly arriving particle wakes (Poisson statistics) for liquid phase properties; and random-walk calculations based on statistical time-series methods for particle properties. Multiphase flow, Sprays, Particle-laden flow. (jes).

"Present understanding of transition to turbulence has now been studied over one hundred and fifty years. The path the studies have taken posed it as a modal eigenvalue problem. Some researchers have suggested alternative models without being specific. First-principle based approach of receptivity is the route to build bridges among ideas for solving the Navier-Stokes equation for specific canonical problems. This book highlights the mathematical physics, scientific computing, and new ideas and theories for nonlinear analyses of fluid flows, for which vorticity dynamics remain central. This book is a blend of classic with distinctly new ideas, which establish different dynamics of flows, from genesis to evolution of disturbance fields with rigorously developed methods to tracing coherent structures amidst the seemingly random and chaotic fluid dynamics of transitional and turbulent flows"--
