Tungsten carbide is an extremely hard grey compound created by reaction of tungsten and carbon at high temperatures. This book encompasses elementary and valuable data on tungsten carbide. It covers topics ranging from powder processing to machining sciences with the purpose of facilitating the industry in discovering more possible applications. Tungsten carbide has drawn the attention of engineers as well as academics due to its distinguished properties like hardness and wear-resistance, chemical inertness and high melting point. It has several applications across distinct fields like oil and gas, wear parts, aerospace, mold and die, semiconductors, marine technology, cutting and mining tools, automotive, etc. It holds great potential specifically because of its quality to resist extreme temperature conditions and exceptionally hard nature.

This book embraces the entire range of problems associated with phase equilibria in “tungsten – carbon” binary system and related ternary systems, nonstoichiometry, disorder and order in different tungsten carbides, electronic and crystal structure of these carbides. The main application of tungsten carbides is constituent in hardmetals for cutting tools. In the last 20 years, the most active efforts were made in synthesis and application of nanocrystalline tungsten carbide for the production of nanostructured hardmetals. The present book describes in detail different methods for production of nanocrystalline tungsten carbide. The peculiarities of sintering of Co hardmetals from nanocrystalline powders having different particle sizes are discussed. Materials scientists using tungsten carbide to create novel superhard and tough materials will find this book particularly useful.

Tungsten carbide (WC) is widely used in manufacturing industries because of its higher wear resistance property. The high hardness and melting point with excellent abrasive and corrosion resistance properties makes it most suitable for cutting tool industries. In order to increase the tool life efforts are being made to synthesize nano size WC powders through different techniques. In the present work WC nano particles were synthesize at comparative low temperature by thermo chemical route, and by mechanical synthesis route direct from the Wolframite ore. The synthesized nano WC powders were embedded in cobalt matrix and sintered. Cutting tool based on nano structured WC-Co particles will bring a revolutionary change in the development of cutting tool and also affect the cost of many other products related to the development of tool materials. The tool life is directly related to the size and distribution of WC particles in Co matrix. The reduced size of WC particles will lead more uniform distribution of it in Co matrix, which ultimately will lead to have more life time of cutting tool as compared to conventional material.
