No intention of this sort has been the motive leading to the present publication. But when engaged in reflection on the first principles of these controversies, the Author became convinced that false conclusions had been drawn from them, and that much misapprehension existed regarding them, it seemed but a small tribute to the cause of a great national institution, to attempt an exposure of these misrepresentations. A strict regard to truth does not warrant the assertion, that either of the controversies in which the National Church has recently been involved can be regarded as at rest. On the one hand, Voluntaries still avow the same hostility to the principle of Union between Church and State, and their resolution to seek its repudiation.
