The racy jambalaya of war stories, anecdotes, observations and comments was gleaned from street cops all over New Orleans... America's most exotic and romantic city. Offbeat stories and comments from patrolmen, narcs, detectives, deputy sheriffs and state troopers are mixed with little known facts, forming a spicy Creole gumbo. As one NOPD old-timer remarked, "Some of these stories will make you laugh out loud. Others will bring tears to your eyes."Written by veteran cop, James Prine, The Real Police is not for the squeamish, and it cheerfully thumbs its nose at 'political correctness.' These true stories are the part of police work cops usually keep to themselves. If you're a street cop, or if you've ever wanted to be one... This book is for you.

Gene Fields spent 35 years of his adult life in law enforcement in the Metro New Orleans area. For 19 years, he served on the New Orleans Police Department beginning in 1961. In 1980, he retired, accepting a Deputy Chief with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. He retired again in 1995. This book chronicles Gene's memoirs, providing a compilation of criminal investigations, unusual incidents, terrorism, and humorous stories involving Gene, his friends and co-workers, and the occassional celebrity. Gene relives dramatic changes within the NOPD. He served the city during a transition period, as veteran officers who joined after WWII and the Korean War, retired, and a new, more ambitious breed, replaced them. Some of these recruits were better educated and more diverse. What you will read in this book is factual and supported by police reports, news clippings, and most importantly, the recollections of those involved in the stories. Some names have been changed to protect the identities and prevent unnecessary embarrassment. Some people may be aggravated or insulted by how they are described in certain cases, but Gene stands by his accounts, and the read is a fascinating one.

After September 11, 2001, Las Vegas Police Sergeant Randy Sutton began soliciting writing from law enforcement officers-his goal being to bridge the gap between the police and those they serve, with a book that offers a broad and thoughtful look at the many facets of police life. Hundreds of active and former officers from all over the United States responded: men and women from big cities and small towns, some who had written professionally, but most of whom were doing so for the first time. The result is True Blue, a collection of funny, charming, exciting, haunting stories about murder investigations, missing children, bungling burglars, car chases, lonely and desperate shut-ins, routine traffic stops, officers killed in the line of duty, and the life-changing events of September 11. Here, officers reveal their emotions as they recount the defining moments of their careers. Some of the stories include: -Two cops' desperate search for a missing child feared kidnapped -The revival of the one-month old baby who was shot in the face in a drive-by shooting -A patrol officer's dramatic showdown with a hostage-holding gunman -On-the-scene details of rescue and tragedy during the 9/11 terrorist attacks
