A brief survey is presented of methods that have been developed for active tritium monitoring that may be applied to measure tritium concentrations in air containing /sup 13/N, /sup 16/N, and /sup 41/Ar produced by D-T neutrons. Included are instruments that employ current subtraction to achieve discriminations and others that selectively remove atmospheric water vapor from stream of activated air.

This report describes the various anthropogenic and natural sources of tritium in the atmosphere, the chemical forms of tritium in the atmosphere, and the physical and chemical behaviour of tritium in the atmosphere. This includes discussion of atmospheric dispersion processes and modeling approaches to estimating dispersion in the context of public dose assessment. The report also describes the dynamic behaviour of tritium in the hydrological cycle, including transfer of tritium from air to soil water and surface water, tritium transport from soil water to groundwater, and tritium behaviour in lake and river receiving environments. Beyond this literature review of tritium behaviour in atmospheric and hydrological environments, this report considers available tritium monitoring data for a number of licensed nuclear facilities releasing tritium, examines model predictions of environmental concentrations of tritium, and compares predicted and observed concentrations. The report is organized as follows: Section 2.0 describes the various sources of tritium, Section 3.0 describes the physical and chemical behaviour of tritium in the atmosphere, and Section 4.0 describes the behaviour of tritium in the hydrological cycle, and Section 5.0 compares predicted and observed behaviour at various release sites.--Includes text from document.

This paper describes the current status of research on an improved tritium measurement system at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the US Navy. Present tritium-in-air monitoring systems installed by the Navy can reliably measure to less than 10 [mu]Ci/m3, but medical and safety issues are pushing measurement needs to below 1 [mu]Ci/m3, which is equivalent to 1--10 nCi/ml in liquid samples, using calcium metal converter. A significant effort has been expended over the past 10 years by the Navy RADIAC Development Program at ORNL on various schemes to improve the detection of tritium in both air and liquid at near ambient levels. One such scheme includes a liquid flow-through system based on an NE102 sponge scintillator with dual photomultiplier tubes for the tube noise rejection. (This document also contains copies of the slides used for presentation of this paper to the IEEE 1991 Nuclear Science Symposium). 4 refs., 17 figs.

During 35 years of operation of the Savannah River Site (SRS) there have been a small number of inadvertent tritium releases to the atmosphere. After detection of the releases by stack monitors, field crews were dispatched to determine the concentration of tritium in the environment. The objective of the measurement was to verify environmental concentrations calculated by dose assessment models. Air samples were used to verify the concentration levels and tritium forms during the plume passage. It was not feasible to take enough samples in the plume path to determine the two dimensional distribution of tritium concentration in the plume. However, the ground level distribution was very well reflected vegetation samples. Therefore, it is unusually possible to determine plume shape, plume width, and the relative maximum concentration as the plume moves downwind from the vegetation samples. In eight of the nine releases studied, the monitoring data allowed comparison with atmospheric transport models.
