A frozen spin polarized target, constructed at Jefferson Lab for use inside a large acceptance spectrometer, is described. The target has been utilized for photoproduction measurements with polarized tagged photons of both longitudinal and circular polarization. Protons in TEMPO-doped butanol were dynamically polarized to approximately 90% outside the spectrometer at 5 T and 200-300 mK. Photoproduction data were acquired with the target inside the spectrometer at a frozen-spin temperature of approximately 30 mK with the polarization maintained by a thin, superconducting coil installed inside the target cryostat. A 0.56 T solenoid was used for longitudinal target polarization and a 0.50 T dipole for transverse polarization. Spin relaxation times as high as 4000 hours were observed. We also report polarization results for deuterated propanediol doped with the trityl radical OX063.

Investigations on N* production generally have to face large t- and u-channel background and broad, overlapping resonances. In order to disentangle the large variety of contributions it is necessary to employ not only unpolarized cross section data but also polarization data. Comparisons of PWA solutions and model calculations show that the presence of particular resonances in the s- channel have large effects on polarization observables. At Jefferson Lab, a major program has been proposed to perform a large set of experiments using linearly and circularly polarized photon beams and longitudinally and transversely polarized targets together with the large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B.

This report lists the final, best estimate of the target polarization P[sub T] as a function of time for all of the periods during which scattering data were (or may have been) collected. The information under RUN'' refers to [Delta][sigma][sub L]-runs. The notation sfs'' stands for start of frozen spin, '' efs'' for end of frozen spin, '' [yields] la'' for go to large-aperture'' target magnet position, and nla'' for not large-aperture'' position, i.e., the target magnet is in polarizing'' position. Where the NOTE'' column is blank it means that all standard frozen-spin conditions were in effect: the target temperature was reduced and the magnet was in large-aperture position. The timing marks were developed on the basis of three criteria: (1) the availability of direct NMR data, (2) the inclusion of major Target and Run boundaries, and (3) the arbitrary inclusion of enough minor'' Run boundaries to shorten large timing gaps. The sign of the P[sub T]-values is given in the NMR convention: (+) corresponds to predominant occupation of the Zeeman ground state (the thermal'' NMR-signals are considered positive). Since the target magnet field pointed upstream, (+) corresponds to target spin antiparallel to the beam momentum. The estimated uncertainty on P[sub T] is [plus minus]6.5% (2[sigma]), and the estimated uncertainty on the ratio of values for the two signs of polarization, P[sub T](+)/PT([minus]), is [plus minus]4.3% (2[sigma]).

A polarized 13C target has been developed and used to measure spin observables for 500-MeV p - 13C elastic scattering. The material was ethylene glycol, 13C2H6O2, enriched to 99% in 13C. Both the 13C and 1H spins were dynamically polarized in a 3He refrigerator at 2.5-T magnetic field. The polarization of both species was measured by using the NMR thermal equilibrium calibration technique. In addition, the polarization of 1H was independently measured by p-p scattering. We described the target and reported on the polarizations obtained and the dependence of the polarizations on integrated beam intensity. 9 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Where do our images about early hominids come from? In this fascinating in-depth study, David Van Reybrouck demonstrates how input from ethnography and primatology has deeply influenced our visions about the past from the 19th century to this day - often far beyond the available evidence. Victorian scholars were keen to look at contemporary Australian and Tasmanian aboriginals to understand the enigmatic Neanderthal fossils. Likewise, today's primatologists debate to what extent bonobos, baboons or chimps may be regarded as stand-ins for early human ancestors. The belief that the contemporary world provides 'living links' still goes strong. Such primate models, Van Reybrouck argues, continue the highly problematic 'comparative method' of the Victorian times. He goes on to show how the field of ethnoarchaeology has succeeded in circumventing the major pitfalls of such analogical reasoning.A truly interdisciplinary study, this work shows how scholars working in different fields can effectively improve their methods for interpreting the deep past by understanding the historical challenges of adjacent disciplines.Overviewing two centuries of intellectual debate in fields as diverse as archaeology, ethnography and primatology, Van Reybrouck's book is one long plea for trying to understand the past on its own terms, rather than as facile projections from the present.David Van Reybrouck (Bruges, 1971) was trained as an archaeologist at the universities of Leuven, Cambridge and Leiden. Before becoming a highly successful literary author (The Plague, Mission, Congo...), he worked as a historian of ideas. For more than twelve years, he was co-editor of Archaeological Dialogues. In 2011-12, he held the prestigious Cleveringa Chair at the University of Leiden.
