Excerpt from Voice From the Trees: And Other Poems Indeed as a rule it was only under the direct and immediate impact of nature that Frogley could write. Nearly everything that he cared to preserve was written out of doors. Hence he read chiefly in the winter and wrote in the summer half of the year; and he played with his camera as a means of preserving his impressions for the eye almost as affectionately as he did with the graving tool of verse that registered them on his mind. Two reproductions of his tree work are introduced into this volume. It is probably an effect of this dependence upon im mediate out-door contacts, coupled with the fact that Frogley was never physically robust, rather than any lack of sympathy with the wilder and more boisterous aspects of nature that limits the range of his nature poems. Speaking of writing in the open air, in a letter dated in the middle of March, he says: Of course it isn't possible yet, least of all in boisterous March; not but that the face of dear Nature is inspiring enough if one's body would put up with the temperature conditions. Excerpt from The Christmas Tree, and Other Poems Christmas eve. The stars are bright in the wintry sky, And the Wind is cold, oh, piercing cold But the Christmas bells chime merrily Up in the belfry brown and old. And cheerily 011 the high church walls, From vaulted roof to nave below, A brilliant light from the gasjets falls And fills the room With a midday glow. Excerpt from The Shadows of the Trees: And Other Poems Dear little face, With placid brow and clear, up-looking eyes, And prattling lips that speak no evil thing; And dimpling smiles, free of fair-seeming lies, Unschooled to ape the dreary world's pretence; Sweet imager of cloudless innocence, The tenderest flower of Nature's fashioning A dewy rose amidst the wilderness, Amidst the desert a clear-welling spring, So is thy undissembling loveliness, Dear little face. Dear little hand! How sweet it is to feel against my own The touch of that soil: palm, which never yet The taint of soul-destroying gold hath known There Nature's seal of trustfulness is pressed, Even as her loving touch the lily blessed With stainless purity - even as she set The golden flame upon the daffodil, And heaven's clear blue upon the violet, May her best gifts be for thy clasping still, Dear little hand. Excerpt from Trees in Prose and Poetry Trees, in their literary aspect, have as yet found small place in the nature books of to-day; but with the increasing amount of tree study in our common schools there is need of a collection of tree stories and poems. In the compilation of this little book the aim has been to present in the form of a supplementary reader for advanced grades the best literature, legendary, historical, and fanciful, that has been inspired by our common trees. Such a book may well have a place in every schoolroom. Where nature study is taught, the selections may be used as supplementary material; where nature study is as yet unattempted, an intelligent study of the selections must inspire the children with a love for the trees and a desire to know them better. There is no result of nature study that does so much to transform well-known scenes as a knowledge of the trees; and an important aid to this larger vision is familiarity with the thoughts of the great writers on these most majestic specimens of the plant world.
