When he first envisioned becoming a farmer, author Emmet Van Driesche never imagined his main crop would be Christmas trees, nor that such a tree farm could be more of a managed forest than the conventional grid of perfectly sheared trees. Carving Out a Living on the Land tells the story of how Van Driesche navigated changing life circumstances, took advantage of unexpected opportunities, and leveraged new and old skills to piece together an economically viable living, while at the same time respecting the land's complex ecological relationships. From spoon carving to scything, coppicing to wreath-making, Carving Out a Living on the Land proves that you don't need acres of expensive bottomland to start your land-based venture, but rather the creativity and vision to see what might be done with that rocky section or ditch or patch of trees too small to log. You can lease instead of buy; build flexible, temporary structures rather than sink money into permanent ones; and take over an existing operation rather than start from scratch. What matters are your unique circumstances, talents, and interests, which when combined with what the land is capable of producing, can create a fulfilling and meaningful farming life.

Pastor and writer Michael D. Kurtz reflects upon lessons learned from growing Christmas trees for nearly twenty years and applies these lessons to everyday faith and living in LESSONS FROM A CHRISTMAS TREE FARM. In the prologue Kurtz writes: "The instructions from God's creation are pronounced and profound if we will open our eyes, minds, and hearts to the inherent lessons. Growing Christmas trees, like growing in the Christian faith, is neither quick nor easy. There is required of us patience, diligence, and hard work. And, above all, divine grace." Divided into thirty chapters LESSONS is easily adaptable to a monthly devotional resource, by simply reading a chapter per day for one month. Or, LESSONS FROM A CHRISTMAS TREE FARM is ideal for small groups and Sunday School classes. Each chapter is designed around one theme with a section entitled "Questions and Reflections" at the conclusion of every chapter suitable for discussion. In LESSONS FROM A CHRISTMAS TREE FARM the reader will discover a wealth of biblical and practical wisdom for living. As you read this engaging volume you will not only be entertained, you will also be encouraged and inspired in your spiritual journey.

When Madison McDowell returns from several years teaching overseas, she has high hopes of picking up where she left off at her family's Christmas tree farm in Oregon. But between damage from a recent wildfire and the neglect due to her sister Addie's unwillingness to invest, the farm is in sad shape. In fact, Addie is intent on selling the property. And to top it off, her former high school flame, the now-widowed Gavin Thompson, has plans to break Madison's heart again by turning his neighboring property into a dusty, noisy dirt bike track for his daughter. With the odds stacked against her, Madison decides there's only one thing to do: double down on her dreams. It will take a ton of hard work--and some help from an unlikely ally--to save the farm she so dearly loves. But it may take a miracle to restore her relationship with her sister. This is a story of an extraordinary Farmer, Ted, his sheepdog Rounder and their adventures created by the mystery and theft of a mystical jewel. The jewel is acquired by Ted during his travels in the mountains of Sylvania where he solves the puzzle of an ancient hermit who has been waiting for him for a thousand years. In the wood there are creatures of the forest, including the hermit's wolf, who have been transformed into animals because of breaking the sacred laws of the forest. The jewel has mysterious healing powers and, through it, Ted's farm and his farmyard animals prosper. The animals have adventures of their own, including cleverly outmanoeuvring a dangerous dog, and defeating a sly fox with the aid of little mice and a talking crow. The jewel is stolen by two rascals of the road, by trickery, and Rounder and his friends go in search of the jewel. Meanwhile Ted is duped by an unscrupulous business man into selling the farm. The animals receive help from a strange fabulous creature, the Gombit, from sideways land. One of the rascals has a moment of redemption after being saved from certain death by Rounder. After pursuing the remaining trickster they return to the farm where they have one last task to save it from sale with the aid of a courageous goat. The adventure ends with the appearance of a strangely familiar man of power. He bears a profound message from the ancient people of the Lakota.

Before this handbook there were only a few technical or scientific articles, made during the previous 10 years. This new book contains, in a single logical path, all the activities necessary to design the naturalistic Permanent Polycyclic Tree farms. Two chapters touch upon establishment and management of wood plantation, while three chapters outline the environmental and economic impacts of naturalistic Permanent Polycyclic Tree farms. The handbook, edited by AALSEA and Compagnia delle Foreste within the project LIFE + InBioWood (LIFE12 ENV/IT/000153), is now available in a digital version for free download from the website www.inbiowood.eu. This book, called “Design, implementation and management of naturalistic Permanent Polycyclic Tree farms”, describes a "new way" to produce wood outside forest, through some innovative naturalistic and agronomic criteria developed to overcome some of the main limitations of traditional tree farms.
