This proceedings volume presents new scientific works of the research workers and experts from the field of Wood Science & Fire. It looks into the properties of various tree species across the continents affecting the fire-technical properties of wood and wood-based materials, its modifications, fire-retardant methods and other technological processes that have an impact on wood ignition and burning. The results of these findings have a direct impact on Building Construction and Design describing the fire safety of wooden buildings, mainly large and multi-story ones. The results of these experiments and findings may be applied, or are directly implemented into Fire Science, Hazard Control, Building Safety which makes the application of wood and wood materials in buildings possible, while maintaining strict fire regulations. One part of the contributions focuses on the symbiosis of the material and the fire-fighting technologies. Wood burning has its own specific features, therefore, the fire protection technologies need to be updated regularly. It also includes the issue of the intervention of fire-fighting and rescue teams in the fires of wooden buildings. Presentations deal with the issue of forest fires influenced by the climate changes, relief, fuel models based on the type and the age of the forest stand.

Download Fire Performance of Wood Treated with Combined Fire-retardant and Preservative Systems Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The availability of western red cedar has decreased in recent years, and other species of wood are being considered as substitute materials for wood shakes and shingles. However, the wood of these alternative species is more susceptible to decay than is western red cedar. The objective of this study was to evaluate the fire performance of combined fire retardant and preservative treatments using different fire test methods. Several amino resin fire retardants were used in combination with several wood preservative compounds that imparted both fire retardancy and decay resistance to wood. Treated specimens underwent fire tube tests and based on the results of these tests, two fire retardants and two quaternary ammonium preservatives were selected for additional fire testing. These treated materials were subjected to a modified Schlyter test and a burning brand test. The heat release rate was also measured. Both weathered and unweathered specimens were evaluated. The unweathered and weathered treated material exhibited good fire performance.

Materials are at the center of all technological advances; it is evident in considering the spectacular progress that has been made in fields as diverse as engineering, medicine, biology, etc. Materials science and technology must develop researches allowing the generation of new methods of protection to reduce fundamentally the losses of human life as well as the economic ones. The former are impossible of quantifying, while the latter are highly significant; thus, only those derived from corrosive processes in their different forms reach, in technologically developed countries, about 4% of the Gross National Product (GNP), while those derived from fire action range from 0.5 to 1.0% of the mentioned GNP. The book, in the different chapters, displays original systems of superficial protection and of low environmental impact to minimize the losses by corrosion and the fire action.
