Departure for Philae--Locusts--Sail for Ibrim--Ruins at Gartaas--Taeefa-- Cataracts of Galabshee--Ruins at ditto--Temple at Garsery--Arrival at . Dukkey--Description of temple there--Hailed by an officer of the Cashief of Deir--Interview with the latter--Arrival at Deir--Excavations--Narrow escape of the writer--Ibrim--Superstition of natives. As Pococke and Denon did not proceed beyond Philae, and Norden, who ascended as far as Deir, appears rarely to have landed, and does not give any account of the antiquities of Nubia; and though Mr. Legh's work contains much valuable information; yet, as the objects described in it are new, I may be excused for entering again on the subject. I shall therefore relate what I saw in my progress up the Nile above Philae. I had to regret that Mr. Hamilton and his companions were not able to prosecute their researches here. Fortunately I received some information which was of use to me from Mr. Buckingham, an English gentleman, who went as far as Dukkey a short time before me. Having gratified my curiosity at Assuan and Elephantina, I prepared for my voyage; and, as the navigation was stopped by the rocks by which the river is here filled, and the channel so divided and reduced, in the ordinary state of the stream, as not to leave sufficient breadth or depth for boats; I therefore quitted mine, to proceed by land to the shore opposite Philae, and procured asses for my journey. On the 10th of May, I left Assuan, attended by my English servant and an Arab from my boat, having two asses for riding and three for baggage, accompanied by the sheik of Assuan's son, named Osman, as guide and guard; and proceeded through the ruins of the Arab town on the heights above Assuan. The collective volume Ottoman Cyprus - New Perspectives presents new studies on various topics (primarily history, but also history of art, folklore and literature) about Cyprus in the Ottoman period (1571-1878), offering new approaches on the history of institutions and developments in Cyprus during the Ottoman period, in an attempt to propose new interpretative frameworks and a more analytical reading of the historical past. The book is divided into four parts: The first part concerns the history of the island from the eve of the Ottoman conquest until the cession of the island to British administration. The studies of this part follow a chronological order, and analyze developments in Cyprus as an Ottoman province and part of the Empire's periphery. In the second part there are studies that analyze various particular historical topics, without necessarily following a chronological order. In the third part there are studies on literature, folklore and art. The fourth part includes an extensive bibliographical guide, a catalogue of archives and archival material related to Cyprus in the Ottoman period, as well as chronological lists of important officials.

This study of Galilee in modern times reaches back to the region's Biblical roots and points to future challenges in the Arab-Jewish conflict, Israel's development, and inter-faith relations. This volume covers an array of subjects, including Kabbalah, the rise of Palestinian nationalism, modern Christian approaches to Galilee's past and present, Zionist pioneering, the roots of the Arab-Jewish dispute, and the conflict's eruption in Galilee in 1948. The book shows how the modernization of Galilee intertwined with mystical belief and practice, developing in its own grassroots way among Palestinians, Orthodox Jews, Christians, and Druze, rather than being a byproduct of Western intervention. In doing so, The History of Galilee, 1538–1949: Mysticism, Modernization, and War offers fresh, challenging perspectives for scholars in the history of religion, military history, theology, world politics, middle eastern studies, and other disciplines.
