Individual art therapy sessions with fifteen clients between the ages of 12 and 17 who reside at a residential treatment facility or group home took place in a small town north of Pittsburgh. A review of the agency is followed by a review of related literature that speaks to trauma-informed care, the sanctuary model, and an approach used in the sanctuary model, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Also included in the related literature is information on youth residential facilities, art therapy with children who have experienced trauma, and trauma-informed art therapy. A case study provides examples of the successful application of art therapy under the sanctuary model. The art therapist's personal responses to working with the agency, the sanctuary model, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, art therapy and the case-study client are discussed. Reproductions of the client's artwork are included.
