It is in principle possible to trap charged particles in an rf cavity. In this note the authors calculate the trapping mechanism of the field pattern given by (1). The trapping occurs for either sign of the charge of the particles. The mode pattern (1) traps particles around the node point (0,0,0). Such a trapping mechanism is of course considered favorable for a particle trap. On the other hand, it may also happen that undesirable stray particles are trapped at nodes of an rf device, which then perturbs the normal operation of an accelerator. Such trappings are then undesirable and are to be avoided.

This second volume of the Charged Particle Traps deals with the rapidly expanding body of research exploiting the electromagnetic con?nement of ions, whose principles and techniques were the subject of volume I. These applications include revolutionary advances in diverse ?elds, ranging from such practical ?elds as mass spectrometry, to the establishment of an ult- stable standard of frequency and the emergent ?eld of quantum computing made possible by the observation of the quantum behavior of laser-cooled con?nedions. Bothexperimentalandtheoreticalactivity intheseapplications has proliferated widely, and the number of diverse articles in the literature on its many facets has reached the point where it is useful to distill and organize the published work in a uni?ed volume that de?nes the current status of the ?eld. As explained in volume I, the technique of con?ning charged particles in suitable electromagnetic ?elds was initially conceived by W. Paul as a thr- dimensional version of his rf quadrupole mass ?lter. Its ?rst application to rf spectroscopy on atomic ions was completed in H. G. Dehmelt’s laboratory where notable work was later done on the free electron using the Penning trap. The properties of a nonadiabatic magnetic system for trapping and confining charged particles are derived. The trapping mechanism is a helical perturbation that matches the gyrations of an incoming particle beam. These particles, in resonance with the structure, convert their axial energy into transverse energy even in the absence of a magnetic mirror. By the same scheme, a spiraling beam could be straightened out. The best injection system is a fourconductor set, which is analyzed in detail. Once confined, the particles experience small and almost random nonadiabatic perturbations in their motion; they diffuse in both real and velocity space. A linear operator that governs this diffusion is presented; it is applicable to a uniform magnetic field with small perturbations. The velocity-space diffusion in a magnetic mirror is calculated for a general perturbation and in particular for a helical perturbation. For this last case, the injected particles can be confined for serval hundred axial transits. (Author).
