The growth of regularity from disorder, the evolution from the simple towards the complex, and the spontaneous formation of spatio temporal patterns in general are questions which intrigue everybody. This has been one of the hasic philosophical topics from ancient to modern times. Is nature able to create something fundamentally new by itself? If yes, how does this creation occurs? Or does nature only reproduce something which was already encoded in it, from the very beginning? This remained a topic exclusively for philoso phers until very recently, and it was only a few decades a. go that physicists started to convert this seemingly purely philosophical subject into a scientific discipline: a scientific discipline like other scientific disciplines, where one re lies on formulas and equations, on nunlerical simulations, and on laboratory experiments. This book is not about general questions related to pattern formation and self organization in nature. It is about spontaneous patterns in just one part of nature in nonlinear optical systems, and, more precisely, in nonlinear optical resonators. Nonlinear optical systems represent a small part of nature, hut a very representative part: one can observe here nearly all the known symmetries of patterns, one can generate nearly all known types of localized strlictlires and one can realize nearly all known spatial instabilities and spatial bifurcations.

Download Transverse-Pattern Formation in Photorefractive Optics Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Overview of current developments in nonlinear photorefractive optics. The book dicusses exciting discoveries, with special emphasis on transverse effects such as spatial soliton formation and interaction, spontaneous pattern formation and pattern competition in active feedback systems. Different aspects of potential applications, such as wave guiding in adaptive photorefractive solitons and techniques for pattern control for information processing, are also described.

Guiding graduate students and researchers through the complex world of laser physics and nonlinear optics, this book provides an in-depth exploration of the dynamics of lasers and other relevant optical systems, under the umbrella of a unitary spatio-temporal vision. Adopting a balanced approach, the book covers traditional as well as special topics in laser physics, quantum electronics and nonlinear optics, treating them from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamical systems. These include laser emission, frequency generation, solitons, optically bistable systems, pulsations and chaos and optical pattern formation. It also provides a coherent and up-to-date treatment of the hierarchy of nonlinear optical models and of the rich variety of phenomena they describe, helping readers to understand the limits of validity of each model and the connections among the phenomena. It is ideal for graduate students and researchers in nonlinear optics, quantum electronics, laser physics and photonics.

Download Optical Angular Momentum Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Spin angular momentum of photons and the associated polarization of light has been known for many years. However, it is only over the last decade or so that physically realizable laboratory light beams have been used to study the orbital angular momentum of light. In many respects, orbital and spin angular momentum behave in a similar manner, but they differ significantly in others. In particular, orbital angular momentum offers exciting new possibilities with respect to the optical manipulation of matter and to the study of the entanglement of photons. Bringing together 44 landmark papers, Optical Angular Momentum offers the first comprehensive overview of the subject as it has developed. It chronicles the first decade of this important subject and gives a definitive statement of the current status of all aspects of optical angular momentum. In each chapter the editors include a concise introduction, putting the selected papers into context and outlining the key articles associated with this aspect of the subject.

Download Nonlinear Optics and Optical Physics Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book consists of contributions by leading authorities in nonlinear optics and optical physics. The topics covered include fundamental theories and formalisms on nonlinear optics and current topics of interest in optical physics, as well as more specialized subjects such as phase conjugation, nonlinear guided waves, parametric oscillations and some novel materials. The coverage is comprehensive but pedagogical in nature.

Download Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking, Self-Trapping, and Josephson Oscillations Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This volume collects a a number of contributions on spontaneous symmetry breaking. Current studies in this general field are going ahead at a full speed. The book present review chapters which give an overview on the major break throughs of recent years. It covers a number of different physical settings which are introduced when a nonlinearity is added to the underlying symmetric problems and its strength exceeds a certain critical value. The corresponding loss of symmetry, called spontaneous symmetry breaking, alias self-trapping into asymmetric states is extensively discussed in this book. The book presents both active theoretical studies of spontaneous symmetry breaking effects as well as experimental findings, chiefly for Bose-Einstein-Condensates with the self-repulsive nonlinearity, and also for photorefractive media in optics.

Download Nonlinear Optics and Laser Spectroscopy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This volume begins with a brief up-date of "Laser Sources" and "Spectroscopic Instrumentation and Practice." Non Linear Optics section contains reviews of the fundamental value concerning "Intense Laser Bean Instabilities" and "Atoms and Molecules in Intense Laser Fields" as well as topics of recent interest including Pattern Formation, Optical Phase Conjugation, Solitonic Propagation and Photo-refractive crystals. Laser Spectroscopy section includes a detailed review of Molecular Spectroscopy principles and concise review of Group Theory. Many topics of contemporary interest include Bosonic Effects in Raman Spectroscopy, Resonant Raman Spectroscopy of Low Dimensional Semiconductors, Dynamic Light Scattering Study of Turbulence and Laser Brillouin from Polymeric Gels and Networks. The class-room type coverage of selected topics would encourage young scientists in taking up challenging research projects in areas of Non-linear Optics and Laser Spectroscopy.
