Through the study of a large variety of musical practices from the U.S.-Mexico border, Transnational Encounters seeks to provide a new perspective on the complex character of this geographic area. By focusing not only on norteña, banda or conjunto musics (the most stereotypical musical traditions among Hispanics in the area) but also engaging a number of musical practices that have often been neglected in the study of this border's history and culture (indigenous musics, African American musical traditions, pop musics), the authors provide a glance into the diversity of ethnic groups that have encountered each other throughout the area's history. Against common misconceptions about the U.S.-Mexico border as a predominant Mexican area, this book argues that it is diversity and not homogeneity which characterizes it. From a wide variety of disciplinary and multidisciplinary enunciations, these essays explore the transnational connections that inform these musical cultures while keeping an eye on their powerful local significance, in an attempt to redefine notions like "border," "nation," "migration," "diaspora," etc. Looking at music and its performative power through the looking glass of cultural criticism allows this book to contribute to larger intellectual concerns and help redefine the field of U.S.-Mexico border studies beyond the North/South and American/Mexican dichotomies. This enables crime and empowers illegal organizations to exchange organizational expertise and, in certain instances, to cooperate with criminals and other militant armed groups. The vast volume of licit trade enables illegal commodity trafficking to create insurmountable challenges for state entities trying to track them down. Deviant globalization is the easiest approach to understand and support how illegal drugs cross boundaries and capture territory across the dark web. In fact, transnational crime groups have made use of developments in information technologies, logistics and even the dark web to extend their capacity to smuggle greater quantities of illicit narcotics, rendering it increasingly challenging for law enforcement to track and stop such operations. One of the most common types of transnational criminal activity is the illicit transport of psychoactive drugs, mandated through three instruments of international law known as drug control conventions, through one or more national frontiers. This is usually referred to as "trafficking in illegal drugs." Although the transnational dimension remains the exception rather than the rule for most types of crime, drug trafficking has had a critical transnational element from the very beginning of the international drug control system in the early 20th century.

By linking the experiences of immigrant families with the increased reliance on cheap and flexible workers for care and domestic work in Southern Europe, this study documents the lived experiences of neglected actors of globalization — migrant women — as well as the transformations of Western families more generally. However, while describing in detail the structural and cultural contexts within which these women have to operate, the book questions dominant paradigms about women as passive victims of patriarchal structures and brings out instead their agency and the creative ways in which they take control of their lives in often difficult circumstances. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, the author offers a valuable dual comparison between two Southern European countries on the one hand and between two migrant groups, one Christian and one Muslim, on the other, thus bringing to light unique detailed data on migration decision-making, settlement and on the multiple ways in which different women cope with the consequences of their transnational lives.

This volume, bringing together work by scholars from Europe, East Asia, North America, and West Africa, investigates transnational religious spaces in a comparative manner by juxtaposing East Asian and African examples. It highlights flows of ideas, actors, and organizations out of, into, or within a given continental space. These flows are patterned mainly by colonialism or migration.
