This book provides empirical evidence to show how democratic experiments are harnessed to achieve control and support authoritarianism, through the lens of participatory pricing, which is one of the most important forms of deliberative democracy in China. The crucial point is an interlacement of easily perceptible improvement in empowerment (voluntary enrollment, disclosure of information and opportunities for expression during events) and hidden control (delicately designed procedures and pre-existing frameworks that influence participants in how they think, and when they talk). The mixture of these two mechanisms assures participants and educates them, producing cooperative citizens desired by the government. This is referred to as the partial empowerment strategy, which challenges the traditional assumption of the correlation between deliberation and empowerment. When authoritarian control influences deliberations in a form that obstructs the natural developmental process of empowerment, it acts as a filter that encourages only some form of empowerment, but precludes those that are too risky for the government. This exertion of dominance through a participatory form reflects the development of governance capability of China as a modern authoritarian state and explains its “surprising” resilience.

The 4IR has become an overarching framework within which education systems, including teacher education, are operating. Contingent upon the ideology of neo-liberalism, the 4IR seeks to transform societies in ways which respond to the relentless developments in technology, the Internet and digital capacities which, by design and intent, are purposed at increasing both productivity and the associated quality while at the same time reducing human intervention in the same processes. In teacher education, how we teach and train student teachers will be substantially influenced by the imperatives of the 4IR. There are multiple unresolved questions as the 4IR takes centre stage. For example, what will it mean for teaching and learning in schools that have severe technological and digital deficits; for teachers and students who have minimal technological literacies; for delivering high-quality teaching and learning; for transforming both the content and pedagogies of teacher education and, above all, for delivering socially just educational experiences for all our learners, regardless of class, race, and privilege. The discourse of the 4IR is contemporary and requires multiple perspectives to explore what it means in different contexts and settings, the understandings it engenders in people, what it implies across a wide range of educational decision-making levels, and that its fundamental assumptions cohere with national and societal assumptions about equality, equity and social justice. Multiple methodological approaches were utilised in the interrogation of the idea of the 4IR in teacher education in South Africa, including theoretical, empirical, and small-scale case studies, amongst others. The data these approaches provide are equally valued based on the purposes for which they have been derived.

Enacting Anti-Racist and Activist Pedagogies in Teacher Education is a timely edited collection that examines the complexities, challenges, spaces of resistance, and possibilities when faculty—specifically Black, Indigenous, and racialized faculty—advocate and implement anti racism approaches and pedagogies in Canadian teacher education programs. Taking an explicitly critical anti-racist approach, the text challenges the pedagogical, curricular, structural, and institutional underpinnings in teacher education framed by whiteness. As a collective, the chapters explore how to disrupt white normalcy by dismantling the hierarchies in place and unpacking intersectionalities, positionalities, and knowledge production through transformative anti-racist pedagogies. Established and emerging academics, as well as field practitioners, present a holistic and nuanced understanding of anti-racism within the educational context and seek to reframe teacher education through resistance and activism, preparing teacher candidates as practitioners for anti-racist work with racialized students, families, and communities. Including key terms, discussion questions, and “toolbox” sections highlighting advice for pre-service K–12 teachers, this text is an essential resource for undergraduate and graduate students in teacher education.

It examines how peace and dance have been related in different cultures and investigates embodied ways to creatively tap the energies of conflicts, inspiring possibilities of transformation and new dynamics in relationships. Drawing on Wolfgang Dietrich’s Many Peaces theory, the book discusses how different expressions of dance have been connected to different interpretations of peace and strategies for transformation. Delving into elicitive approaches to conflict transformation, the book develops an innovative framework for applying movement as an elicitive method, which it vividly presents through the author’s own experiences and interviews with participants in workshops. Given its scope, the book will appeal to scholars, practitioners and artists working at the nexus of peace, conflict transformation and the arts.

In a world where the choices we make resonate far beyond our immediate experiences, the concept of sustainable food practices has risen to the forefront of global consciousness. As our awareness of environmental challenges deepens and our appreciation for ethical living grows, the significance of how we nourish ourselves and our planet has become paramount. "Food for Thought and Thoughtful Food" embarks on a journey that delves into the heart of sustainable food practices, revealing their profound impact on both our personal well-being and the health of our planet. In this exploration, we find a remarkable convergence between the wisdom of ethical considerations, the reverberations of environmental consciousness, and the enduring teachings of Mengzi philosophy. At the crossroads of these three realms lies a path paved with insights that inspire us to be conscientious consumers, responsible stewards of our ecosystems, and virtuous individuals. We recognize that the act of dining is not merely a biological necessity but a powerful expression of our values, echoing through the intricate web of life that connects us all. Drawing from his expertise as an MSc holder in Environmental Science and a Professional Engineer, our author, Peter Meng, guides us through this harmonious symphony of ideas. He deftly weaves the threads of sustainable food service programs endorsed by the RENYI trademark with the timeless wisdom of Mengzi philosophy. Through these pages, we discover the potential for transformative change that lies within our culinary choices. As we embark on this enlightening journey, we're invited to reevaluate the very essence of our sustenance. We uncover the beauty in seeking harmony with nature, the virtue in conscious consumption, and the ethical imperative to leave a legacy of abundance for generations to come. Through the lens of Mengzi's moral philosophy, we witness how the act of dining becomes an opportunity to cultivate our own virtues and to contribute positively to the world. "Food for Thought and Thoughtful Food" encourages us to pause, to reflect, and to embark on a culinary odyssey that transcends the plate and enters the realm of the soul. It is an invitation to embrace the powerful connection between the choices we make at the table and the profound impact we have on the world around us.
