Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Year 1908, Vol. 1 In order to place the subject of the origin of the Concord grape. Fully before you it will be necessary to go back and trace very brie y the history of the grape up to the time that our story proper shall begin. The grape is probably the oldest of cultivated fruits and certainly no other fruit has been cultivated so extensively, although its earlier uses were largely confined to wine making. In this connection we hear a great deal of it in the Bible, even as far back as Noah, who planted vineyards. The grape is undoubtedly of Asiatic origin, but was early introduced into Europe, where now as many as 300 varieties are cultivated in the great wine-growing countries. European varieties of the grape were brought to America very early in the history of the colonies, particularly in the South; but all attempts at cultivation failed owing to the incursions of mildew and rot. Early growers in America followed the same ideas that were practiced in Europe and planted on terraced hillsides. So when European varieties proved unsuccessful many horticulturists turned their attention towards our native grapes and attempted to, improve them through cultivation. As far back as 1800 many efforts were thus made, but it was only in the South that any real success was attained and Isabella and Catawba were produced from native varieties, the former in South Carolina and the latter in Georgia. The introduction of the Isabella in 1819 gave a great impetus to grape growing; and as this variety proved hardy in New England, everyone who owned a back yard bought some of these vines and began growing grapes;. So that up to 1850 this was the only grape grown in New England for table use with the possible exception of the Diana. Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, for the Year 1878, Vol. 1 The discussions on horticultural subjects have been of great ser vice, and are, in my opinion, one of the best of the new features lately added to the Society. Much as they have done for us already, they are capable of doing far more. With us, as with all horti cultural or agricultural clubs or societies, discussion is subject to the same evil that besets our exhibitions. It is apt to go round with the same persons, in the same groove, keeping all the time at about the same level of intelligence 'and knowledge, and so fail to gain its real object, which is to develop those habits of investiga tion and re ection, without which the horticulturist can never be master of his craft. N ow I do not say that our discussions have been of this barren sort. On the contrary, I think that they have done real good. But, judging by former years - for during the last I have unfortunately been unable to attend them they might be made to do a great deal more good. If members would more generally share in them, preparing themselves beforehand to do so by recalling what their own experience may have taught them about the subject announced, and then, by means of books and jour nals, comparing their own results with those reached by others, our discussions would become a powerful means of stimulating observa tion and thought. Two other experiments have been made of late in connection with the discussions, and with similar objects. Prizes have been offered for Essays and persons of known ability, not always mem bers of the Society, have been invited to deliver lectures before it. Both experiments have had a good degree of success. Some of the lectures especially have been admirably suited to awaken interest and kindle a Spirit of inquiry. There has been great improvement in our printed Transactions, both in the quantity and quality of their contents, and in type graphical and literary correctness. Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, for the Year 1905, Vol. 1 Many plants at the time Of their first introduction into America seem harmless and unlikely to cause trouble but after a period of acclimatization on the dumping grounds or in the undisturbed fence corners they suddenly reach a period of active reproduction, and in their offspring the aggressive qualities which class them as weeds are suddenly developed. Thus in 1863 a few plants of rape (brassica campestris) were known to occur at Buffalo, but as late as 1882 the species though persisting was barely established. In 1887, however, it began to be troublesome in fields of central and western New York, and in 1888 it was common on dumps and rubbish heaps in eastern Massachusetts. Then it suddenly appeared as a weed of grain fields and other cultivated grounds throughout New England and eastern Canada where it is still a common nuisance. The blueweed or viper's bugloss (echium vulgare) was known as an occasional waif on dumps or by neglected roadsides for nearly fifty years before it began, within the last quarter-century, to take a strong foothold in dry fields and cultivated land through eastern New York and New England. On the other hand, some plants, which, in the past, have borne hard reputations, seem to have run their course and to have set tled to a less aggressive mode of hfe. The henbane (hyoscyamus niger), a disagreeably sticky and ill-smelling weed, which early Massachusetts botanists considered common, has now practically vanished from the New England flora, though it is abundant in eastern Quebec. Indeed, there seems good reason to assert that even the prickly lettuce (lactuca scariola, var. Integrata), which for years has been the bete noir of the western farmers, is now on the wane. But even though we may hope that all the weeds which are brought to us from foreign lands will eventually become as innocuous as the once common henbane, the prospect of waiting for 600 species and their successors to run their full course is not a pleasing one; and some energetic methods must be employed to check the progress of new weeds.
