Emotion regulation allows people to influence and modify the intensity, duration and types of emotions experienced, and how these emotions are expressed. The capacity to regulate emotions increases and becomes more sophisticated throughout child development due to the maturation of prefrontal brain regions involved in executive functioning. Emotion regulation is a transdiagnostic process that plays a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of internalizing and externalizing symptoms such as anxiety, depression or problematic behaviors. Emotion dysregulation is a prominent feature of neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Furthermore, emotion dysregulation has been suggested to play a vital role in less commonly diagnosed neurogenetic disorders such as Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, germline heterozygous PTEN mutations and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. Fortunately, emotion regulation processes are amenable to treatment in various clinical and non-clinical populations.

Children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) often show emotion dysregulation associated with considerable impairment in social, academic, and family domains. Inhibitory control is a cognitive mechanism that influences emotion regulation and is also often impaired in children with ADHD and/or ODD. The present study investigates the role of inhibitory control as a possible mediator in the association between emotion dysregulation and symptoms of ADHD and ODD. Standardized questionnaires and clinician-facilitated structured interviews were used to collect parent and teacher ratings of difficulties in a clinical sample of 297 children (M age = 8.24 (1.7); 79.3% male) with disruptive behaviour. Findings suggest that inhibitory control is a key cognitive mechanism that mediates the relationship between emotional and behavioural difficulties in children with disruptive behaviour. Consequently, emotion dysregulation and inhibitory control may be important targets in psychosocial interventions for children with ADHD and/or ODD symptoms.

"This study aimed to explore the effect of group emotional self-regulation training using heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) on symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in elementary age children. It was hypothesized that ADHD symptoms including inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, executive functioning deficits, working memory deficits, and emotional dysregulation would improve from pretest to posttest. The sample included four children aged 8-11 years old. One participant had the hyperactive/impulsive subtype of ADHD and three participants had the combined presentation subtype of ADHD. The inattentive subtype of ADHD was not represented in the current study. Participants attended 6 weekly group sessions that lasted 45 minutes each. Participants were placed in groups based on their availability. There was a total of two groups with two children in each group. On the Emotional Regulation Index from the BRIEF®2-P, scores from pretest to posttest significantly decreased, indicating that participants experienced a decrease in problematic emotional self-regulation symptoms. Other symptoms of ADHD including inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, executive functioning deficits, and working memory deficits did not significantly change from pretest to posttest."--Page 6
