Excerpt from Town Records of Manchester, Vol. 2: From 1718 to 1769 as Contained in the "Commoners Records," and the "Fourth Book of Town Records," 1786 to 1786 AT the Annual Town Meeting held March 17, 18 and 19, 1890, the following votes were passed with reference to a continuation of the printing of the ancient records of the town, viz It was voted to accept the Report of the Committee on Old Records and adopt the recommendation contained therein. We earnestly rec ommend a continuance of the work from year to year until all the old records of every kind shall be secure from possible destruction, by being printed. Votes were also passed instructing the same committee (messrs. Daniel Leach, D. L. Bingham and W. H. Tap pan) to go on with the work, and to examine the Proprietors' Rec ords and cause to be printed such portions of the same as in their judgment would be important. An appropriation of four hundred dollars was granted by the town for this purpose, and the Town Clerk (mr. A. S. J ewett) was employed by the committee to pre pare the work for publication. H, Vol. 5: 1829-1835, a Complete and Exact Transcript of the Records of the Clerks as Written in the Town Records of Manchester, Book No; 3, Page 463 to End of Volume and Book No; 4, Pages 1 to 190 Inclusive, Comprising, Volume V, of the Printed Records of the Town The seven years, 1829 to 1835, covered by this volume, was a period of comparative indifference to progress, though the spirit of the new order of activity was being felt. The inventory for 1829 gave 196 taxpayers; that for 1835, 231, not including in either case the nonresidents. The taxes for the first year amounted to (state, county, town, for the last year, state, county, town, total, If the increase of population and business was slight, it could be already seen that it trended towards the settlement about the Falls, which awakened feelings of jealousy and rivalry on the part of those living in other parts of the town. An attempt to repair the old meetinghouse and make of it a townhouse was voted down by those from the new vil lage in 1832. Two years later the matter again came up for consideration and was rejected, but in 1836 a vote was taken to that effect.
