John Atkinson Hobson (1858 - 1940) was an English social scientist and economist most famous for his work on imperialism-which notably had an influence on Vladimir Lenin-as well as his theory of underconsumption. His early work also questioned the classical theory of rent and predicted the Neoclassical "marginal productivity" theory of distribution. In "Towards International Government", Hobson explores the idea of creating an international government spanning many countries in an effort to ensure peace and avoid a repetition of the Great War that was taking place at the time of wring. Contents include: "A League of Peace", "A Basis of Confederation", "International Arbitration: Its Scope and Method", "Settlement by Conciliation", "Court and Council: Their Appointment and Personnel", "International Force", "The Economic Boycott", "The International Executive", etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition together with an excerpt from "Imperialism, The Highest Stage of Capitalism" by V. I. Lenin.

John A. Hobson is widely recognised as the most important British New Liberal thinker of politics and political economy of the twentieth century. The Selected Writings of John A. Hobson showcases an exciting and previously unpublished collection of Hobson's writings and lectures from 1932-1938 that Hobson presented at the South Place Ethical Society in the last decade of his life. The lectures and the introduction produce a fresh reading of Hobson’s thinking and theorization of International Relations, thereby revealing a much more complex thinker than has conventionally been understood. Edited by Colin Tyler, a framing introduction written by the author’s great grandson, John M. Hobson situates these lectures in the context of his life-work on International Relations between 1897 and 1940. Selected Writings of John A. Hobson 1932-1938 is an essential read for all Hobson scholars and students and scholars of globalization and political economy.

J. A. Hobson was an important liberal writer on international relations, most famous for his theory of imperialism. In the first comprehensive analysis of Hobson's writings on international relations David Long examines the philosophical outlook and political economy that inform Hobson's thinking. Setting out the sources of and contradictions within Hobson's proposals for international government, this book is a contribution not only to the study of international relations, but also to the history of political thought and British liberalism.
