The favourable judgment passed by distinguished English journals, (viz: Times and Saturday Review) upon my "Tourist's Guide" 1877, together with the fact that I have thereby acquired the acquaintance of many English people, whose friendly intercourse I hold in high esteem, led me to publish the present little book. Though -certain passages of general import have been textnally transferred to its pages from the Tourist's Guide, the new form I have given to the distribution of the matter and its great increase in size through the introduction of fresh subjects, justify the title: "The Upper Engadine, a guide for the Sound and for the Sick: " even though it contains no technically medical instructions.-- The reasons which induce strangers to seek -our neighbourhood in such large numbers are of very different sorts: Considerations of health, amusement, scientific aims etc.; and certainly it would be difficult to find a second station so well adapted in so many different ways to the demands of the most varied visitors. The high elevation of the Upper Engadine implies qualities in the atmosphere and climate which fit it beyond all question for a favourable Luft-Curort or Health resort, depending on its bracing air. The lie of the valley and the position assumed by the side valleys and abutting mountain-ranges, are essential points, in as much as these determine the direction and force of the winds. The famous mineral-waters of St. Moritz have already ristored thousands of persons to health. The varied excursions which can easily be made through field and forest and romantic glens and extensive Alpine districts, procure for the invalid that continued exposure to pure mountain air which works so pleasantly and profitably upon hi
