Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. The World Catalogue of Insects series is an initiative compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. Each volume in the series contains standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. Additional information is optional, e.g., location, status and condition of types; biology; bibliographical information; pest status; vector status; etc. This volume five focuses on Tortricidae (Lepidoptera). In Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, volume 5, Keith P. Bland offers a comprehensive account of the British members of the moth family TORTRICIDAE sensu lato. For ease of handling, it is divided into two Volumes: Part 1, the Tortricinae & Chlidanotinae, and Part 2, the Olethreutinae. Each volume is self-contained and indexed separately. For each species there is included a full taxonomy, a description of the adult moth, an account of the larval stages and its life history. The up-to-date British distribution for each species is given as maps showing vice-county occurrence, supported with further detail where relevant. Each species is illustrated by means of one or more coloured photographs of mounted specimens, proportionally sized. For all species, the male and female genitalia are depicted by Josef Razowski’s excellent line drawings. Besides an index to the moth species, there is a comprehensive index to larval food substrates. The original text was formed by the late E.F. (‘Ted’) Hancock and extended and updated by Keith P. Bland. Photographs of the adult moths were done by the latter and line drawings of the genitalia were all done by Josef Razowski.

"The general introduction to the two volumes is including acknowledgements, and the characteristics of the family are in volume one. The list of abbreviations is repeated below and the acknowledgements are completed. The former classifications of subfamilies or tribes are already rather of historical importance; however, in almost every one there are some important facts or interesting interpretations. Within a few last years there has been a consensus in almost all classifications problems. The most actual is the proposal of arrangement of the family-level taxa by Horak (1999) which is also followed in this paper. Contents include: Introduction, Systematics, System of the European Tortricidae, Systematic list of Olethreutinae, Olethreutinae, Plates of Genitalia, Plates of Adults, List of Plants, References, Index."

The authors examine relationships within the Chrysoxena group of the tortricid tribe Euliini. They define 54 species among six genera: Chrysoxena Meyrick; Vulpoxena Brown, new genus; Thoridia Brown, new genus; Dorithia Powell; Cuproxena Powell and Brown, new genus; and Bidorpitia Brown, new genus. Using cladistic methods, the authors develop a phylogenetic hypothesis for the genera and species groups of Dorithia and Cuproxena. A systematic treatment of the included species provides appropriate generic assignment for several previously misplaced species and describes many taxa as new.

The authors revise the genus Anopina of the leafroller family, Tortricidae (Lepidoptera). This genus ranges from southern Canada to Costa Rica, with its greatest species richness in the higher elevations of Mexico. The larvae are suspected to be leaf-litter feeders. Sixty-two species are treated, of which forty-nine are described as new to science. The authors provide a hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships of the species, propose a classification, supply a key to species groups based primarily on features of the genitalia, and include illustrations of adults, larvae, and male and female genitalia.
