The aim of the series is to present new and important developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in the community over two decades, it offers a large library of mathematics including several important classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers wishing to thoroughly study the topic. Editorial Board Lev Birbrair, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brasil Walter D. This treatment of analysis on semigroups stresses the functional analytical and dynamical theory of continuous representations of semitopological semigroups. Topics covered include compact semitopological semigroups, invariant means and idempotent means on compact semitopological semigroups, affine compactifications, left multiplicatively continuous functions and weakly left continuous functions, compactifications of infinite direct products, and weakly almost periodic semigroups of Markov operators. Contains over 200 exercises, from simple applications and examples to further developments of the theory.

The papers collected in this volume are contributions to T.I.Tech./K.E.S. Conference on Nonlinear and Convex Analysis in Economic Theory, which was held at Keio University, July 2-4, 1993. The conference was organized by Tokyo Institute of Technology (T. I. Tech.) and the Keio Economic Society (K. E. S.) , and supported by Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc .. A lot of economic problems can be formulated as constrained optimiza tions and equilibrations of their solutions. Nonlinear-convex analysis has been supplying economists with indispensable mathematical machineries for these problems arising in economic theory. Conversely, mathematicians working in this discipline of analysis have been stimulated by various mathematical difficulties raised by economic the ories. Although our special emphasis was laid upon "nonlinearity" and "con vexity" in relation with economic theories, we also incorporated stochastic aspects of financial economics in our project taking account of the remark able rapid growth of this discipline during the last decade. The conference was designed to bring together those mathematicians who were seriously interested in getting new challenging stimuli from economic theories with those economists who were seeking for effective mathematical weapons for their researches. Thirty invited talks (six of them were plenary talks) given at the conf- ence were roughly classified under the following six headings : 1) Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Business Fluctuations, . 2) Fixed Point Theory, 3) Convex Analysis and Optimization, 4) Eigenvalue of Positive Operators, 5) Stochastic Analysis and Financial Market, 6) General Equilibrium Analysis.

This book contains a collection of survey papers by leading researchers in ergodic theory, low-dimensional and topological dynamics and it comprises nine chapters on a range of important topics. These include: the role and usefulness of ultrafilters in ergodic theory, topological dynamics and Ramsey theory; topological aspects of kneading theory together with an analogous 2-dimensional theory called pruning; the dynamics of Markov odometers, Bratteli-Vershik diagrams and orbit equivalence of non-singular automorphisms; geometric proofs of Mather's connecting and accelerating theorems; recent results in one dimensional smooth dynamics; periodic points of nonexpansive maps; arithmetic dynamics; the defect of factor maps; entropy theory for actions of countable amenable groups.
