A spectacular book showing life and work of the Finnish icon from an unknown perspective with around 150 illustrations and well researched texts.Tom of Finland has became the most famous and influential Finnish artist of the 20th century. Born Touko Laaksonen in 1920, his iconic depiction of self-confident and life-affirming gayness gave decisive impulses to the international gay movements from the 1960s onwards. But although we clearly associate his portrayals of sensual and powerful cowboys, farm hands, soldiers and leathermen with the USA, Tom of Finland's rise to gay icon received the game-changing impetus neither in his native Finland nor in the USA. It was, of all places, the city of Hamburg and Tom's friendship with key exponents of the local gay scene in the early 1970s that helped him to his first exhibition ever.He even created a grand mural for the legendary "Tom's Bar", until today the only one legitimately named after him. Regular commissions to design posters and ads for gay events in Hamburg allowed him to launch his artistic career after quitting his day job as advertising executive, and led to the creation of the most extensive private collection of his drawings to date. Galerie Judin is now devoting an exhibition and a comprehensive publication to these seminal, but thus far little researched years, the art they generated and the friendships they formed. The book includes texts by Juerg Judin, Pay Matthis Karstens, Kati Mustola and Alice Delage, conversations with Durk Dehner and Michael P. Hartleben - and a facsimile of the artist's German travel diary from 1955.

Tuoko Laaksonen, also known as Tom of Finland (1920-1991), was an iconic and provocative artist who rose to cult status in the international gay community and beyond for his work celebrating gay archetypes and masculinity during a time when being gay was taboo. Created in partnership with the Tom of Finland Estate, Tom of Finland: The Official Life and Work of a Gay Hero is a beautifully detailed visual biography full of never or rarely seen documents from his archive. The text was completed just a few months before the death of the artist and was fully approved by him--making this book the only 100% approved biography of this gay legend responsible for creating the muscled, mustachioed gay archetype of the 1960s and '70s. With an extensive biography, and suggestive photos and illustrations, Tom of Finland: The Official Life and Work of a Gay Hero brings to life the icon whose erotic illustrations of men influenced many artists, including Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber.

An immersive glimpse into the private, domestic world of one of the twentieth century’s most revolutionary artists. Nestled in a leafy, residential section of Los Angeles is the house where Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen, 1920–1991) lived and worked during the last decade of his life. It is an extraordinary place—part shrine, part haven, part art-historical archive, and part utopian collective. Still occupied by the men who resided there with Tom and dedicated themselves to preserving his legacy, the house serves as a living tribute to the artist’s astonishing oeuvre and his radical vision of unapologetic homoerotic sexuality. Offered to the reader as an intimate view of the man behind the hypermasculine imagery, the book moves from art-filled room to art-filled room, dining room to dungeon. Almost every surface of the house is covered in work made by Tom himself, or by those he influenced and inspired. For additional insight, Martyn Thompson’s revelatory photographs are paired with rarely seen preparatory sketches and unfinished drawings. Together, the compelling images place Tom’s work in an entirely new light, inviting readers to explore a hidden world of dreams and desire—the world of Tom of Finland.

With nine victories, he holds the record for the most wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours -- and he has written motorsport history. Tom Kristensen: The Book, however, is more than just Tom Kristensen's chronicle of his successes at Le Mans: it takes the reader on an exciting journey through four decades full of emotions -- from petrol pumps at his parents' filling station in Denmark to champagne showers in front of 250,000 fans at the world's greatest motor race. Private and never-seen-before pictures, untold stories, new facts and personal insights as told by Kristensen himself make The Book unique. Early years: growing up in Denmark; a close-knit, happy, supportive family; huge success in karting; from penniless talent to Formula 3 champion, in Germany in 1991. Four successful years in Japan: a second Formula 3 title, with the Tom's team in 1993; starring in Formula 3000; showing his versatility in touring cars; living a different life in Japan. Back to Europe: flashes of brilliance in Formula 3000; racing for Honda in touring cars, including in Britain's BTCC; tastes of Formula 1 with test roles at Tyrrell and Williams, and for Michelin. Victory at Le Mans as a rookie in 1997, with Joest Racing's TWR-Porsche; two fruitless Le Mans outings with BMW follow, but there is another famous début win, in the Sebring 12 Hours in 1999. Audi works driver: Le Mans hat-trick, 2000-2002, each time with Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro in the all-conquering R8 -- a unique achievement. Bentley Boy, winning Le Mans in 2003; two more Le Mans wins with privateer teams, Team Goh (2004) and Champion Racing (2005), both in Audi R8s. Diesel-powered: epic fights with Peugeot, none more so than at Le Mans in 2008, an incredible race that brought Kristensen his eighth victory there. His darkest moment: the horrific crash at Hockenheim on 22 April 2007, driving an Audi A4 touring car -- but he recovers in time for Le Mans eight weeks later. Going global: racing the Audi T18 worldwide; World Champion in 2013, his most successful season, which also brings a highly emotional ninth Le Mans victory. Concluding sections: thoughts on fitness and teamwork; his favourite cars, races and tracks; complete results listing. The list of artists who had major influence on the gay movement is rather short, since the movement itself is just a few decades old. But without a doubt Tom of Finland has to be included, the man whose amazing drawings tell us everything about love, lust and life of those hunks who have a good heart and live a simple life. Tom of Finland - Life and Work of a Gay Hero is a detailed anthology which is dedicated to his body of work from its early beginnings to the last years. With many drawings, a lot of photos and an extensive biography it gives you a portrait of this unique artist, which is as many-sided and life-embracing as the artist himself.
