The International Workshop on Time Reversal Invariance and Parity Violation in Neutron Reactions focused on the study of parity violation (PV) and time reversal invariance (TRI) in neutron physics. Emphasis was placed on measurements with polarized neutron beams and polarized targets as well as on the implication of recent theoretical developments for the future progress of this rapidly developing and increasingly important field of research.

The book contains the Proceedings of the 2010 Conference of the Italian Systems Society. Papers deal with the interdisciplinary study of processes of changing related to a wide variety of specific disciplinary aspects. Classical attempts to deal with them, based on generalising approaches used to study the movement of bodies and environmental influence, have included ineffective reductionistic simplifications. Indeed changing also relates, for instance, to processes of acquisition and varying properties such as for software; growing and aging biological systems; learning/cognitive systems; and socio-economic systems growing and developing through innovations. Some approaches to modelling such processes are based on considering changes in structure, e.g., phase-transitions. Other approaches are based on considering (1) periodic changes in structure as for processes of self-organisation; (2) non-periodic but coherent changes in structure, as for processes of emergence; (3) the quantum level of description. Papers in the book study the problem considering its transdisciplinary nature, i.e., systemic properties studied per se and not within specific disciplinary contexts. The aim of these studies is to outline a transdisciplinary theory of change in systemic properties. Such a theory should have simultaneous, corresponding and eventually hierarchical disciplinary aspects as expected for a general theory of emergence. Within this transdisciplinary context, specific disciplinary research activities and results are assumed to be mutually represented as within a philosophical and conceptual framework based on the theoretical centrality of the observer and conceptual non-separability of context and observer, related to logically open systems and Quantum Entanglement. Contributions deal with such issues in interdisciplinary ways considering theoretical aspects and applications from Physics, Cognitive Science, Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Economics, Architecture, Philosophy, Music and Social Systems.

The parity and time-reversal symmetries can be studies in neutron-nucleus interactions. Parity non-conserving asymmetries have been observed for many p-wave resonances in a compound nucleus and measurements were performed on several nuclei in the mass region of A∼100 and A∼230. The statistical model of the compound nucleus provides a theoretical basis for extracting mean-squared matrix elements from the experimental asymmetry data, and for interpreting the mean-squared matrix elements. The constraints on the weak meson-exchange couplings calculated from the compound-nucleus asymmetry data agree qualitatively with the results from few-body and light-nuclei experiments. The tests of time-reversal invariance in various experiments using thermal, epithermal and MeV neutrons are being developed.

I'll discuss the experiments in which parity violation has been measured in low energy neutron-nucleus scattering. The interest is two-fold: to understand how parity violation in the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction manifests itself in a complicated many-body system and to show that the large enhancements observed make this a good laboratory to search for violations of TRI. Further, the procedure of relating the measured parity violating asymmetries to the under-lying NN interaction will be important in order to make the same connection in violation of TRI (or in limits). First, I'll make brief comments on some relevant features of low energy neutron scattering and then review the existing measurements of parity violation. I'll try to explain, at least qualitatively, the origin of the large enhancements observed. Finally, I'll describe the TRIPLE collaboration program to study parity violation and discuss planned experiments to search for violations of TRI. 23 refs.

Parity non-conversation was studied for seventeen states in the compound nucleus 239U by measuring the helicity dependence of the p-wave resonance cross section for epithermal neutrons scattered from 238U. The root-mean-squared parity-violating matrix element for the mixing of p-wave and s-wave states was determined to be M = 0.58{sub -0.25}{sup +0.50} meV. This corresponds to a parity-violating spreading width of [Gamma]{sup PV} = 1.0 × 10−7 eV. This gives a value of 4 × 10−7 for [alpha]{sub p}, the ratio of strengths of the P-odd and P-even effective nucleon-nucleon interactions in 239U. The implications of these results for studies of Time Reversal Symmetry in the compound nucleus is discussed.
