Scientific Study from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, , language: English, abstract: This paper sheds light on the appropriation of the concept of time in the imperialist discourse of Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling. Following a Saidian perspective, it shows that the writings of Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling appropriate time as an ideological tool so as to provide primary support for the British Empire. They do this by the dichotomy they draw between the primitive time of the non-Western people and the evolutionary time of the Westerners. Both writers show that the non-Westerners, in view of their primitivism and the advancement of the Westerners, need the intervention of the latter so as to promote their progress. They make some polyphonic appeal to other disciplines so as to achieve this purpose. Consequently, they, for instance, weave their texts with the teachings of anthropology, biology and history, hence the importance they grant to the concept of time as it is viewed in evolutionary thought of the nineteenth century.

The Imperial Quest and Modern Memory explores relationships between narrative and imperium in the context of Western Modernism by examining the Quest as a vexed trope in Heart of Darkness, Passage to India, The Sheltering Sky, and The Quiet American. The book takes stock of twentieth century theory regarding the Quest--as archetype, trope, and construct, considers the dominant expression and the imperial organization of this trope in Western culture and iconography from the Dark Ages to the Age of Empire, explores the ways in which this trope both lingers and changes in the context of Western Modernism, and finally gauges its permutations in Modern discourse. The Imperial Quest and Modern Memory's central claim is that the Modern novel simultaneously reinscribes and subverts Western and imperial manifestations of the Quest. Heart of Darkness, Passage to India, The Sheltering Sky, and The Quiet American are remarkably Modern and subversive narratives. They participate in the revolutionary projects of early and high Modernism and are often in marked opposition to imperial praxis. Yet they are also profoundly influenced by the deep ideological and metaphoric structures of Western culture. Thus, the Quest trope--specifically in its Western and imperial manifestations--lingers in Modern Memory and certainly in the Modern novel. This expansive study emphasizes intriguing intersections between past and present, culture and archetype, norm and narrative, memory and contemporaneity.

It gave me the notion of an exotic Immensity ruled by an august Benevolence.’ (Marlow) Write an essay discussing whether you think Heart of Darkness endorses this view of the colonizing enterprise. Being a student of history, and of European colonialism in particular, I have had the pleasure to hear of Heart of Darkness several times. Whether it was introduced as a literary bonus to lectures on the notorious atrocities in the Congo or merely served as a vague metaphorical reference in scientific and popular articles, Conrad’s novel seemed to produce unanimous tenor. “[One] of fiction’s strongest statements about imperialism”1 it was; one that like “[no] other Victorian literary work addressed so radically [this] great era.”2 Readers like me would thus deny the above quotation in a sort of reflex retort; pointing to the fact that imperial rule might have been immense in its impact on native life but was certainly far from being benevolent. Rapacity and ruthlessness dominated under the spurious cloak of philanthropic interest – just as Heart of Darkness so clearly shows. Apparently. It is the aim of this essay to dive beyond such well-nigh automatic associations and scrutinise the novel’s treatment of imperialism, equipped with the tools of literary method. In which way does Heart of Darkness really depict the colonial enterprise? And what are the long-term consequences this view entails? I.e. what kind of general judgement can be inferred from the novel? Since imperialism is first and foremost a phenomenon rooted in time, insights from the historical discipline might be helpful and, wherever appropriate, will be used too. Conrad himself expressed this belief in synthesis between history and literature, emphasising that the “novelist is a historian, the preserver, the keeper, the expounder, of human experience.”3 Nonetheless, it is the novel, his fictionalised account, which remains the basis of any kind of interpretation. How this language itself served imperial purposes--and how it survives today in writing about the Third World--are the subject of David Spurr's book, a revealing account of the rhetorical strategies that have defined Western thinking about the non-Western world.Despite historical differences among British, French, and American versions of colonialism, their rhetoric had much in common. The Rhetoric of Empire identifies these shared features--images, figures of speech, and characteristic lines of argument--and explores them in a wide variety of sources. A former correspondent for the United Press International, the author is equally at home with journalism or critical theory, travel writing or official documents, and his discussion is remarkably comprehensive.
