Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Excerpt from Lectures on English Literature The day has come when men, reared among the Shams of Protest, have turned away from the weak support of an emasculated religion to seek rest in a philosophy which offers no certitude, and in a science which is only half understood. They stretch out their hands for bread, and the priests of culture give them a stone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lectures on English Literature: From Chaucer to Tennyson Henry reed was born in Philadelphia on the 1lth of July, 1808. He was christened by the name of Henry Hope, though the middle name was afterwards dropped. His early education was at the classical school, of high repute in its day, of Mr. James Ross. Here began a friend ship, which lasted through life and survived in earnest sorrow for his premature death, with Mr. Horace Binney, (the younger, ) whose name I venture to refer to in simple justice to the living and the dead, to us who grieve and to him for whom we mourn. This friendship was faithful and affectionate to the end. Mr. Reed entered the Sophomore class at the University of Pennsylvania in September, 1822, and was graduated as Bachelor Of Arts in 1825. He began the study of the law under the general guidance of Mr. Sergeant, then at the heighth of his professional fame, and was admitted to practice in the District Court Of the City and County Of Philadelphia in 1829. Excerpt from Sesame and Lilies: Three Lectures Mingled among these either unnecessary or erroneous statements, I find, indeed, some that might be still of value but these, in my earlier books, disfigured by affected language, partly through the desire to be thought a fine writer, and partly, as in the second volume of Modern Painters, ' in the notion of returning as far as Icould to what I thought the better style of old English literature, especially to that of my then favourite, in prose, Richard Hooker. Excerpt from Afternoon Lectures on English Literature: Delivered by Members of the Council From January to June, 1893 Towards the close of last year, it was suggested to the Council of the Eoyal Society of Literature that, in the interests of popular education, a series of afternoon lectures on literary subjects, in addition to the ordinary evening meetings, might be advisable. The idea was favourably received by the Council, and five lectures were subsequently delivered in the meeting room of the Society, to fairly large audiences. The experiment will probably be repeated, and a systematic character be given to future courses of lectures. The present volume is issued for distribution among the Fellows of the Society.
