Excerpt from Thomas Hobbes: As Philosopher, Publicist and Man of Letters This sketch was first written under the title of 'Thomas Hobbes as a Man of Letters, ' being the Matthew Arnold Memorial Essay for 1921, and is now published with some slight additions. An expanded and apparently more pretentious title has been adopted from a desire to set forth the catholicity of Hobbes' studies and to emphasize the fact that his title to fame cannot be baldly summarized in the phrase 'the author of the "Leviathan."' Even so, Hobbes is something more yet than a philosopher (natural and metaphysical), a publicist and a man of letters. He is also a theologian and withal the doughtiest exponent of a theory of the divine modus operandi which has never quite lost popularity from pagan times to the present day. Resembling in much that other great theorist of Authoritarianism, de Maistre, Hobbes unfavourably distinguishes himself from the protagonist of the ultramontane theory of sovereignty by failing to perceive that the problem of moral authority is more profound than that of political authority. His failure does but serve to shew that the problems of the English (Puritan) Revolution were, despite certain appearances to the contrary, less fundamental in the history of thought and religion than those of the French Revolution. Excerpt from Thomas Hobbes This brief sketch has throughout been written directly from the original text of Hobbes himself and his contemporary biographers, though use has, of course, been made, especially in the first chapter, of the labours of such modern students as Professor Croom Robertson, Professor F. Tonnies, and Sir Leslie Stephen. The verbal quotations from Hobbes's works are given from the following editions: (1) Elements of Philosophy, (Concerning Body), London, 1656; (2) Human Nature and De Coipore Politico, from the third edition of Hobbes's Tripos, London, 1864; (3) Leviathan, from the reprint of the first edition in the series of 'Cambridge English Classics, ' 1904, which has been carefully compared with my own copy of the edition of 1651, (apparently one of the 'inferior' issue). The spelling of these editions has been preserved, but the punctuation modified in accord with present-day usage. Allusions to the Latin texts of (1) and (3) are based on the edition of Hobbes's Opera Philosophica published by Blaeuw of Amsterdam in 1668. Excerpt from Hobbes I desire to Offer most grateful thanks to His Grace the Duke Of Devonshire, not only for permitting me to have free access to the Hobbes mss. At Hardwick, but also for his signal generosity in intrusting the more important Of them to me in London, when it was found that they could not be conveniently studied on the spot. This favour was first granted, a long time back, at the instance of the late Mr Grote but lately it has been renewed, as regards the most valuable of the mss. (the copy Of 'the Elements Of Law, Natural and Politique, ' with Hobbes's autographic dedication and corrections), upon the expression Of a simple request. I have been thus enabled to discover not a few facts Of importance concerning one whose connection with three generations Of the Cavendish family reflected equal credit upon it and upon him. Excerpt from English Political Philosophy: From Hobbes to Maine It is conceived that, by the critical application both of the old Deductive and the new Historical Methods of reasoning to the successive systems of the leading English political thinkers, we might arrive, if not at a more comprehensive system, which it is not my object to attempt to construct, yet at a body of principles, a set of reasoned conclusions on the more important and fundamental and recurrent topics that might be useful to all who take a rational interest in politics and political questions. Excerpt from De Cive: Or the Citizen Thomas hobbes was born near Malmesbury in Wiltshire, England, on April 5, 1588. His mother gave birth to him prematurely, as the story was told, because she took fright at the approach of the Spanish Armada to the English coast. He commented, late in life, on the circumstances Of his birth in the words: she brought forth twins - myself and fear. His remark has at least some purport. It reflects the realization of an old man of more than eighty years of age, that he had sought through a long life to make himself secure amidst the tur moils of civil war and violent shifts of political power. It also indicates a fundamental theme Of his political philosophy, namely, that the prime need of man, a need which must be satisfied before any other consequent goods may be Obtained, is peace under a stable government. By a deep and careful analysis of the text, enabling a new printing history of Leviathan to be constructed, this edition demonstrates that the traditional picture is substantially wrong. Both the Bear and Ornaments editions contain corrections and changes by Hobbes himself and are therefore central to reconstructing his text. In their substantial Introduction the editors examine all previous editions of Leviathan (as well as the manuscript copy prepared for Hobbes as a presentation copy for the King), throwing light on its history and calling into question the assumptions of previous editors. They thus provide an entirely new picture of its production. Schuhmann and Rogers also make full use of the Latin edition of Leviathan, published in 1668 when Hobbes was 80 years old. Through these new perspectives they are able to offer the first complete critical edition to take proper account of the publishing history and of Hobbes's own wishes. The result is as definitive an edition of Leviathan as modern scholarship can provide. >
