It is certain that a morbid process, as long as it remains contagious, must needs also be infectious; on the other hand, we have often witnessed that in Syphilis, as well as in other diseases, the morbid process continues to be infectious long after it has lost its contagiousness. Little by little only are we enabled to analyse the essential features of contagion; even in so simple a form of infection as the infection by contact in Syphilis, there are still many, often scarcely perceptible, incidents which seem to modify and complicate the process of infection; consequently there has been an universal desire to clear up the strange contrast between early and late manifestations of Syphilis. All endeavours to separate them have failed; nothing remains of the theory of "grafting " (?) but the term " tertiary." The theory of the identity of late manifestations of Syphilis with the effects of mercury has been refuted long since. A more recent view, viz., that gummata are not direct but indirect products of the syphilitic poison has still to be proved. One of the chief objections to this theory is based upon the fact that the anatomical structures of the early and late syphilitic productions show no essential differences. The expansion of the morbid foci from single papular infiltrations into extensive pathological structures can only be interpreted as the result of the continuation of infection. There must be mentioned, also, the possibility of relapses even in the last stages of the disease and after an indefinite number of years. There are very few dermatologists who have not met with cases in which, years or even decenniums after the spontaneous extinction or cure...
