Excerpt from An Elementary History of the United States Histories of the United States of America have been many times written, and in many ways; so often, indeed, that some might deem there was nothing more to say, or no new way of saying it. Yet new histories are of yearly appearance, and the world does not seem tired of welcoming them. These are usually written for the old; but why not new histories for the young? - who can certainly find no more profitable reading than the story of the origin and development of their own country. No romance, in fact, can possess more of interest and adventure, of heroic efforts and noble deeds, than may be found in the history of the discovery and settle ment of the American continent, and the birth and growth of the great republic of the United States. In all the annals of mankind there is little to surpass it in interest, and nothing in importance. To the youthful American, indeed, it is indispensable, and whatever else he may learn, a full and accurate acquaintance with the story of his own land should stand first in his course of study, as a requisite preliminary to the making of an American citizen. Excerpt from New School History of the United States of America Eleven years and more have elapsed since the first publication of this text-book. This period has witnessed a series of grave transactions, and a surprising increase of the population, produci tions, and wealth of the country. It seemed indispensable to extend the narrative to the completion of the century since the surrender of the British at Yorktown assured American Independence. To do this, it was necessary to contract the story throughout, so that the volume might be kept within suitable limits. Matters of secondary importance have been omitted, and greater brevity of statement has been introduced where practicable, particularly in the earlier periods and the War of Secession. There is no longer necessity or propriety in treating the late mournful struggle with the same fulness as before. Moreover, the wondrous perspective of time has already diminished the prominence of many events. And has suffered minor details to melt into the haze of the receding landscape. Excerpt from The United States and Latin America Considering the South Americans as independent nations, they them selves and no other nation had the right to dispose of their condition. We have no right to dispose of them, either alone or in conj unction with other nations. Neither have any other nations the right of disposing of them without their consent. Excerpt from A Short History of the United States IN this book I have sought to tell clearly and impartially the story of human achievement in what is now the United States, from the earliest traces of man's existence to the present time. Out of the multitude of facts which may be considered within the domain of American history, those have been recounted which seem best suited to explain the progress of the people as a nation. The influence of physical environment has been discussed in the opening chapter, which also deals with the primitive inhabitants. An attempt has been made to give the colonial period its proper unity and show in what manner the colonies were a part of the general British scheme of im perial government. At the same time one must remember that it is American and not British history which concerns us, and for that reasor. The narrative must not neglect the individual colonies. From the end of the colonial period the dominant interest is the progress of events which'have to do with the common cause of independence, and after that with national development. Much thought has been given to the proper distribution of em phasis between the various historical factors. Political institutions are the most conscious expression of the national will. They determine the form of the story which the historian has to tell. But social and economic conditions and the actions of leading men give color and contour to the figure and decide whether it be attractive or unattractive, vivid or unimpressive. This volume contains at inter vals summaries of the habits and social progress of the people, while throughout it seeks to present the decisions of congress and adminis trations in the matters which relate to the most important phases of popular welfare. It is believed that, if well done, it thus becomes in the most vital sense a social history. My aim has been to lay the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue further the subject of American history in whatever phase they may be interested. Excerpt from The Inner Life of the United States The present volume consists of some impressions and observations gained during my numerous sojourns in the United States of America. I make no pretensions to having written a book on America. My purpose has rather been to trace some of those characteristics of a country, still in its formative and growing period, which have most struck me, and to treat a few of those questions with which, by reason of my occupations, I am best acquainted. Thus it is that my interest has been more in the abstract than in the material side of things. The motive forces themselves were the objects of my attention rather than their products immense though the latter often are.
