Download Thermal-Structural Composites for Aerospace Applications Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Advanced aerospace applications require combinations of property characteristics which cannot be met by monolithic materials. New materials and processes combined to contribute specific properties offer the most promise for satisfying these requirements. Property evaluation of both material components and final composites is difficult and is a limiting factor in optimizing the design and utilization of such heterogeneous structures. Inorganic bonded refractory fiber-based composites have been developed to meet specific requirements of varied applications. Examples representative of several thermal-structural applications are presented with attention directed to factors considered in the design; for example, thermal, mechanical, and electrical property evaluations as influenced by construction. Difficulties encountered in tests to define and control variables affecting these properties are indicated. Examples of simplified test methods for evaluation of variables of construction are given.

Download High Performance Materials in Aerospace Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Aerospace presents an extremely challenging environment for structural materials and the development of new, or improved, materials: processes for material and for component production are the subject of continuous research activity. It is in the nature of high performance materials that the steps of material and of component production should not be considered in isolation from one another. Indeed, in some cases, the very process of material production may also incorporate part or all of the component production itself and, at the very least, will influence the choice of material/component production method to be employed. How ever, the developments currently taking place are to be discovered largely within the confines of specialist conferences or books each dedicated to perhaps a single element of the overall process. In this book contributors, experts drawn from both academia and the aerospace industry, have joined together to combine their individual knowledge to examine high performance aerospace materials in terms of their production, structure, properties and applications. The central interrelationships between the development of structure through the production route and between structure and the properties exhibited in the final component are considered. It is hoped that the book will be of interest to students of aeronautical engineering and of materials science, together with those working within the aerospace industry. Harvey M. Download Polymer Composites in the Aerospace Industry Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Polymer composites are increasingly used in aerospace applications due to properties such as strength and durability compared to weight. Edited by two leading authorities in the field, this book summarises key recent research on design, manufacture and performance of composite components for aerospace structures. Part one reviews the design and manufacture of different types of composite component. Part two discusses aspects of performance such as stiffness, strength, fatigue, impact and blast behaviour, response to temperature and humidity as well as non-destructive testing and monitoring techniques.

Download Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization of Aerospace Composites Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization of Aerospace Composite Materials is a collection of ten SAE technical papers focusing on the design analysis of aerospace composite structures from the perspective of various disciplines. The book concentrates on the following aspects: • Analytical methods for weight design of aircraft structures, including a parametric geometry model capable of generating dedicated models for both aerodynamic and structural solvers. • Methodologies for evaluating the structural performance of carbon/epoxy composite panels. • An aerodynamic design of flexible wings made of composite structures. • Thermal design and analysis of composite enclosures. • Methodologies for analyzing the acoustic performance of composite structures, including the design optimization method to evaluate the acoustic performance in terms of transmission loss (TL) of various composite panels. • The lightening effect on composites, presenting a theoretical method to compute the electrical current propagating through composite structures due to lightning strikes. • The issue of fire resistance as most polymer resins are flammable once the respective ignition temperatures are reached. • A probabilistic-based reliability analysis of the composite structures. The method is demonstrated on a graphite/epoxy composite space habitat subjected to the debris attacks. • A sustainability analysis of aircraft composite materials, including improved durability, less maintenance, and lower energy consumption.

Download Adaptive, tolerant and efficient composite structures Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Composite structures are most efficient in performance and production cost when combined with smart materials making them adaptable to changing operational conditions. The specific production processes of composites offer the possibility to integrate more functions thus making the structure more valuable. Active functions can be realized by smart materials, e.g. morphing, active vibration control, active structure acoustic control or structure health monitoring. The foundation is a sound understanding of materials, design methods, design principles, production technologies and adaptronics. Along the complete process chain this disciplines together deliver advanced lightweight solutions for applications ranging from mechanical engineering to vehicles, airframe and finally space structures. This book provides the scientific foundations as well as inspiring new ideas for engineers working in the field of composite lightweight structures.
