Excerpt from There's No Base Like Home I want you to come out to the park with me for about a hour, he interrupts. I have got hold of a bird which I can buy cheap from Buffalo and I gotta get him quick if at all. I wanna short flash at him at work - he's gotta be back there to - night. Of course, I won't have much time to see whether he's worth a cigar coupon or a fistful of diamonds, but if he shows me anything at all, I'm gonna take him along. He's a infielder by nationality and maybe I can put him on second next year instead of Watson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Home at the Haven: A Tale There now, Dickey, you look quite smart, ' said she, 'just like a lady in a yellow satin dress, sitting in a green bower! And wasn't it lucky, Edward, that I heard that old man crying his water-cresses, and that I noticed the other day that he had groundsel to sell as well Now really, Dickey, you must give us one of your best songs this morning, only not too loud, so as to make mamma's head ache. Ah! You have found out the sugar have you? I know you like sugar.' Suddenly Lucy lowered her voice, and said to her brother, who was crouched down in a corner close to the window with his book on his knees, which were stuck up, so as make a reading desk, Edward, do you' know, I think I see the postman coming down the street but don't say any thing to mamma about it, and don't cry out, there's the postman, if you hear him knock. Mamma is always so disappointed when he does not bring her a letter, and she is so tired of expecting one from uncle that I wish she would not remember that it is post time at all.' Excerpt from Without a Home Just ten years ago I took my first hesitating and dubious steps toward authorship. My reception on the part of the public has been so much kinder than I expected, and the audience that has listened to my stories with each successive autumn has been so steadfast and loyal, that I can scarcely be blamed for entertaining a warm and growing regard for these unseen, unknown friends. Toward indifferent strangers we maintain a natural reticence, but as acquaintance ripens into friendship there is a mutual impulse toward an exchange of confidences. In the many kind letters received I have gratefully recognized this impulse in my readers, and am tempted by their interest to be a little garrulous concerning my literary life, the causes which led to it, and the methods of my work. Those who are indifferent can easily skip these preliminary pages, and those who are learning to care a little for the personality of him who has come to them so often with the kindling of the autumn fires may find some satisfaction in learning why he comes, and the motive, the spirit with which, in a sense, he ventures to be present at their hearths. One of the advantages of authorship is criticism; and I have never had reason to complain of its absence. My only regret is that I have not been able to make better use of it. I admit that both the praise and blame have been rather bewildering, but this confusion is undoubtedly due to a lack of the critical faculty. Acrobats and manipulators of objects, trained animals, and clowns – have been performing throughout history. In the eighteenth century, the invention of the circus ring provided a focus for the activities, and the modern circus was born. Once the circus was the most spectacular entertainment many Americans saw. When the supply of cheap labor disappeared and other forms of entertainment became available, the giant circuses shrank, and in the last quarter of the twentieth century new one ring circuses returned. The Circus and Circus Culture area of the Popular Culture Association has been examining circus history, circus life, the relationship of circus to society, and the impact of circus on the visual and literary arts since 1997. This book is a collection of papers from its annual conferences. "This fascinating collection showcases the transnational richness and cultural depth of the circus in an array of historical and contemporary settings. Strongly recommended for circus enthusiasts and students of popular culture, history, and theater." —Janet M.Davis, Associate Professor, Chair of the Department of American Studies, College of Liberal Arts at UT Austin, author of The Circus Age: Culture and Society under the American Big Top

Excerpt from The Brown Papers With the bed took from under her, as is a painful position I should say, tho' p'raps them as is used to it don't feel it, as would be my death, to say nothing of the disgrace, as I'm sure sure some people ain't no teelin', or that mrs. Warne never could have had the face for to put up Genteel Apartments, when her place was a downright dog hole, and as to twelve shillings a week, it was highway robbery downright; and no wonder as parties always bolted, tho' as to her a-saying as that brought her to ruin, it's rubbish, for if ever there was a woman as took a drop, she was the party, a-sendin' out the girl for it all hours, downright brazen, as a bottle in the apron always looks bad in my opinion; but if you want to know any more about me ask the neighbours right and left, and you'll hear a plenty, as I've had to threaten with the law once or twice; so you look out as you don't go a-printing any things as is like a label on me, for I've got friends in the law, thro' one a-being a porter at a law stationer's these fifteen years, and my own nlece's boy is in chambers in the Temple, as is a easy place at six shillings a week, tho' lonesome, thro' the gentleman always a-promising to be back in [ten minutes, and never a-turning up no more. Mind, I don't want none of your flattering butter, a-talking about my wirtues, and as to your a-sayin' as people likes me, that's fall very well, but why ever shouldn't they, as never did them no 'arm, nor wouldn't hurt a fly was it ever so? Only, whatever you say, don't ge about a-statin' as isn't true, for I never had a con sumption, as you meant for to hawk me about onbook-stalls, tho' I'm sure there's a many I could give ideas to in welcome, as don't seem to have none in their own heads; tho' Iwill say as book-learnin' don't do much good, except to them as has their senses about 'em, and then books isn't necessary; but parties 'as often told me as I spoke like a book, as I'm sure any one is welcome for to hear. So no more at present, thro' mr. Giddens, as I've got to write it, being obligated for to go, and I 'turns him many thanks thro' 'aving took that pains over it, and remains, yours respectful.
