Excerpt from Theory of Political Economy Association at the Cambridge Meeting in the year 1862. A still briefer abstract of that paper was inserted in the Report of the Meet ing a, and the paper itself was not printed until June 1866 b. Since writing that paper, I have, over and over again, questioned the truth of my own notions, but without ever finding any reason to doubt their substantial correctness. I have therefore thought it needless to delay any longer submitting the theory to the oriti cism of those who are interested in the progress of Political Economy. Excerpt from Elements of Political Economy This work is intended primarily for the use of students. The leading principles are stated, as far as possible, without the introduction of controversial matter. At the same time, throughout the work indications are given of the points still in dispute and of the difficulties involved in the further development of the principles and theories of which an elementary exposition is given. The work is based on the "Principles of Political Economy" (3 vols.) by the same author. It is, however, not simply an abstract. In the first four books the material used has been almost entirely recast. In the last book it was thought better to omit certain topics altogether rather than attempt any further condensation of the argument. In order to keep the volume within reasonable limits the greater part of the historical matter which forms a characteristic feature of the larger work has been excluded, though the results of the application of the historical method have been retained. Little space also was available for the history of economic thought and doctrines. In the text, however, the importance of these and other omitted topics has been emphasised, and the student is recommended throughout to supplement his reading by reference to special works. Excerpt from Political Economy Political eoonomy is, and has been for some years, in a transitional state, which is proof of its vitality. On the one side it is becoming more abstract, and on the other side it is becoming more realistic. The two movements are not in the least Opposed, unless in the sense that they act and react on each other incessantly to the great advance ment of the study. Much modern Economic science is being increasingly assimilated in form and method to the Natural sciences. In chemical and physical labora tories which can pretend to any distinction realistic researching never stops; but speculation as regards the fundamentals of chemistry and physics continue and must continue. In the great laboratory of the world a multitude of realistic researches remain to be made by economists, and it is only as they are made that the science Of economics will develop satisfactorily; but to attack the ultra-abstract and mathematical economists on that account, in the supposed interests of realism, is suicidal. Of this book Speculative results of a very general kind are the substance. I have to thank Mr. A. Fingland Jack, Lecturer on Economics and Commerce in the University of Manchester for his kind assistance with the proofs. Excerpt from Outlines of Political Economy The two departments of sociology which have been most systematized are political economy or economics, and poli tics. Of these two, economics is the more capable of being systematized and is the more highly systematized - for reasons to be explained (p. The rest of sociology is as yet only imperfectly systematized. Much material has yet to be collected, and much Classification has yet to be attempted, before any considerable number of fruitful generalizations can be looked for. Economics, we have noticed, is differentiated from general sociology by the fact that the activities which primarily occupy its attention are those which have reference to wealth. Poli tics is distinguished similarly by the reference oi its data to government; but as some human action has reference at the same time to wealth and to government - public finance and factory legislation, for instance, being subjects which relate to both - economies and politics overlap to some extent.
