How a country competes in the world is the crucial factor in determining that country's ability to benefit from international trade in today's global economy. This book offers a complete and proper understanding of the meaning of international competitiveness, analyzes the implications it holds for an economy's progress, examines how it may be pursued and sustained at both the sectoral level (firms and industries) and the national level (strategic objectives). The author offers pertinent policy guidelines and prescriptions for how a nation can achieve and maintain international competitiveness in order to sustain the long-term prosperity of its industries, and hence the overall pace of economic growth. The book is arranged into three parts. Part I discusses and defines the theories of international competitiveness. Part II deals with policy issues, specifically the policy analysis of structural reforms for promoting a country's ability to compete, the impact of globalization and the role of Communication and Information Technology (CIT), strategic trade policies, and environmental issues. Part III analyzes the strategies used to pursue competitiveness. The book will be useful for researchers, students, and teachers of business and economics as well as policy makers, business practitioners, and international and governmental agencies.

Download From Adam Smith To Michael Porter: Evolution Of Competitiveness Theory Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Latest Edition: From Adam Smith to Michael Porter: Evolution of Competitiveness Theory (Extended Edition)Traditionally, a nation's international competitiveness has been explained by international trade theories originating from Adam Smith. However, today's global economy is too complicated to be explained by the traditional trade theories. Recently, Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School introduced a new competitiveness theory, the so-called diamond model. He differentiated his theory from the traditional trade theories by arguing that national prosperity is not inherited, but created by choices; in other words, national wealth is not set by factor endowments, but created by strategic choices. He showed different choices of creating wealth, which had been quite limited in the world of traditional trade theories. His diamond model has lately been extended by several scholars. This book highlights Porter's achievement by comparing it with those of traditional trade theorists and presents new developments of competitiveness theory. By discussing the “before” and “after” of Porter's theory, the authors provide the reader with a holistic picture of competitiveness theory.

Noting that the globalization of the economy has become an irreversible, universally dominant trend, the author argues that the countries that will meet with the greatest success at the century's end will not be unleashed market economies but rather what he terms "active and learning societies" that attempt to solve their problems on the basis of an organizational and governance-related pluralism. Download International Competitiveness and Monetary Policy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Can a country gain international competitiveness by the design of optimal monetary stabilization rules? This paper reconsiders this question by specifying an open-economy monetary model encompassing a 'production relocation externality,' developed in trade theory to analyze the benefits from promoting entry of domestic firms in the manufacturing sector. In a macroeconomic context, this externality provides an incentive for monetary authorities to trade-off output gap with pro-competitive profit stabilization. While helping manufacturing firms to set competitively low prices, optimal pro-competitive stabilization nonetheless results in stronger terms of trade, due to the change in the country's specialization and composition of exports. The welfare gains from international policy coordination are large relative to the case of self-oriented, strategic conduct of stabilization policy. Empirical evidence confirms that the effects of monetary policy design on the composition of trade predicted by the theory are present in data and are quantitatively important.

Download International Economics: Global Markets And Competition (4th Edition) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
International Economics: Global Markets and Competition integrates the microeconomics of international trade with open economy macroeconomics and finance. The theory is comprehensive but presented with intuitive diagrams. The book emphasizes the gains from international competition and the limits of trade policy.Economics began during the Industrial Revolution with a debate over import tariffs. To this day, domestic industries lobby for tariff protection against foreign competition, paying lawmakers for tariffs on imports. Only under special conditions do tariffs lead to economic gains. Domestic importers of materials and industrial products favor free trade, as do export industries since tariffs encourage other countries to retaliate with tariffs of their own.Trade theory includes market analysis and general equilibrium models of the economy. This text integrates the full range of trade theory with exchange rates, balance of payments, international finance, and open economy growth and macroeconomics. The presentation focuses on diagrams and avoids equations and algebra. The theory is presented with numerical examples. The text does not assume intermediate economics, instead developing the theory with thorough explanations. Questions in each section build confidence in applying the theory. Boxed examples illustrate the importance of the theory.Students like the concise and straightforward style. Instructors notice the difference on exams.
