The system of three-dimensional boundary layer equations for incompressible fluids is solved for the case of a yawed cylinder, these equations having been treated separately by means of the "principle of independence". The method of solution makes use of power series expansions in terms of the time due to Blasius. Different laws of motion lead to universal coefficient functions of the coordinate representing the distance from the wall. These functions are calculated to a high degree of accuracy for the case of an impulsive start from rest to a state of uniform motion, namely: a) for the components of the transverse flow (perpendicular tot he axis) as an extension of th results of Görtler; b) for the additional axial component as a continuation of the author's' calculations of 1946. The methods applied are discussed. The circular cylinder is chosen and as an example and the growth of the boundary layer is followed up both numerically and graphically from the beginning of the motion and the process of separation is investigated. The investigations were carried out by the author at the Mathematisches Institut der Universität Freiburg i.Br., Germany Department of Applied Mathematics, during the time from December, 1953 to March, 1954.

Download Theoretical Investigations on the Boundary Layer with Pressure Gradient Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Some recent investigations about the boundary layer, with pressure gradient, in the incompressible fluid flow along a flat, smooth plate, are briefly summarized. The results of those investigations are compared with the experimental ones found by the author. Some considerations are drawn on the Tollmien-Schlichting theory of instability, the transition Reynolds number, the origin of the spots and the outline of the turbulent boundary layer. (Author).
