The systems-analysis theory of handling qualities (which describes the pilot's adaptive behavior in closed-loop operation by servo techniques, and relates his opinion-ratings to his adapted characteristics and the system performance) is used to reveal some important parameters associated with the numerator terms in the airframe longitudinal transfer function. The predictions are verified by five experienced test pilots operating in a fixed-base aircraft simulator. Four possible numerator effects on handling qualities are analyzed theoretically: short-period lead effect on pitch attitude tracking, static-to-short-period gain effects on attitude tracking, short-period lead effects on the control of short-period divergence, and numerator frequency and damping effects on altitude tracking. The results are correlated with other test work, and the implications of these results on future handling qualities research and specifications are discussed.

Longitudinal and lateral directional flying qualities for the re-entry mission are reported. The program utilized primarily a high-fidelity fixed-base ground simulator with evaluations made by three pilots. One of the three pilots also made in-flight evaluations of longitudinal flying qualities in the same vehicle, a threeaxis variable stability airplane flown with a two-axis side controller and conventional rubber pedals. Control sensitivity evaluations were compared to center stick results of earlier work. The longitudinal flying qualities as evaluated both on the ground simulator and in flight are compared and related to earlier investigations. Pilot rating variability, both interpilot and intrapilot, are quantized and discussed for the ground and flight experiments. Performance measures are reported.

Because of the 'applied' nature of ergonomics there are many outstanding pieces of work that have never been published in the archival literature. These volumes collect some of those papers that have attained classical status.

After three decades of research, neurobehavioral toxicity is now acknowledged as a significant outcome of chemical exposure. Its health and economic costs may exceed those by cancer by substantial amounts. This new perspective has been accompanied by efforts designed to explore the responsible mechanisms, to design applicable risk assessment procedures, and to determine the consequent policy implications. This publication includes 25 papers from international experts and includes: human neurobehavioral toxicity; animal behavioral methods; selected model compounds; and risk assessment.

Computer-Assisted Simulation of Dynamic Systems with Block Diagram Languages explores the diverse applications of these indispensable simulation tools. The first book of its kind, it bridges the gap between block diagram languages and traditional simulation practice by linking the art of analog/hybrid computation with modern pc-based technology. Direct analogies are explored as a means of promoting interdisciplinary problem solving. The reader progresses step-by-step through the creative modeling and simulation of dynamic systems from disciplines as diverse from each other as biology, electronics, physics, and mathematics. The book guides the reader to the dynamic simulation of chaos, conformal mapping, VTOL aircraft, and other highly specialized topics. Alternate methods of simulating a single device to emphasize the dynamic rather than schematic features of a system are provided. Nearly-forgotten computational techniques like that of integrating with respect to a variable other than time are revived and applied to simulation and signal processing. Actual working models are found throughout this eminently readable book, along with a complete international bibliography for individuals researching subjects in dynamic systems. This is an excellent primary text for undergraduate and graduate courses in computer simulation or an adjunct text for a dynamic systems course. It is also recommended as a professional reference book.
