Rosalinda tries on the new red velvet dress her grandmother just finished making. When she twirls in front of the large standing mirror and comes to a stop, she does not see herself. The mirror goes dark, and she finds herself standing in some other girl's bedroom. A boy about her age bursts through the door, stops, and demands to know who she is and where his cousin Rose is. Rosalinda tells him she has no idea how she got there and all she wants to do is get back home. The boy introduces himself as Trace, and they decide to work together to figure things out. Once Trace introduces Rosalinda to Rose's grandmother Lilly, it becomes clear that the woman is a strong but good witch and that magic must have been involved in Rosalinda's travel through the mirror. Trace reveals that Rose had been secretly nosing around in Grandma Lilly's library for magic books and stole some of them. He suspects she was experimenting with some spells. To figure out which spell Rose might have tried that made her disappear and brought Rosalinda in her place, Trace and his new friend explored Grandma Lilly's library--the basement packed with furniture, boxes, and a mysterious trunk, the attic full of clothes and other junk, and finally the lighthouse where Rose hung out. Along the way, Trace and Rosalina encounter an evil witch named Marless, along with several monstrous beasts she uses against them. The pair are helped by Hunter, a friendly warlock. In a cave below the lighthouse, Rosalinda and her allies discover that two innocent characters are trapped in cages suspended from the ceiling, along with frightful creatures also cooped up in the same way. Marless appears with a small army of minions and releases the caged savages to defeat Rosalinda, Trace, Hunter, and Grandma Lilly. Brute force and clever spells clash in a violent struggle to triumph over the opponents. But how will this end? Will Rosalinda and her friends ever find the spell that takes her back where she belongs?

At the same time that 1970s feminist psychoanalytic theorists like Jean Baker Miller and Nancy Chodorow were challenging earlier models that assumed the masculine psyche as the norm for human development and mental/emotional health, writers such as Anne Sexton, Olga Broumass, and Angela Carter were embarked on their own revisionist project to breathe new life into fairy tales and classical myths based on traditional gender roles. Similarly, in the 1990s, second-wave feminist clinicians continued the work begun by Chodorow and Miller, while writers of fantasy that include Terry Windling, Tanith Lee, Terry Pratchett, and Catherynne M. Valente took their inspiration from revisionist authors of the 1970s. As Schanoes shows, these two decades were both particularly fruitful eras for artists and psychoanalytic theorists concerned with issues related to the development of women's sense of self. Putting aside the limitations of both strains of feminist psychoanalytic theory, their influence is undeniable. Schanoes's book posits a new model for understanding both feminist psychoanalytic theory and feminist retellings, one that emphasizes the interdependence of theory and art and challenges the notion that literary revision involves a masculinist struggle with the writer's artistic forbearers.

New York Times bestselling author Jana DeLeon brings a humorous, paranormal women’s fiction tale. For many, midlife is only the beginning. It was a day like any other day for Marina Trahan…until she caught her husband in bed with another woman. Before that eye-opening wake-up call, Marina would have described her life as average or uneventful, maybe even boring. But now, chaos and confusion reign supreme. She’d expected to slide through midlife with her unwanted extra pounds, chin hair, and hot flashes and move somewhat gracefully into elastic waist pants and having no verbal filter. But with a wayward husband, a high-maintenance daughter, a lackluster career, and a crazy mother all weighing her down, Marina is ready to wave the white flag of surrender. Then an intriguing stranger named Alexios shows up out of nowhere and insists she is descended from a goddess and is the only person who can save the world from certain destruction. She has roughly a week to do it. Solving a centuries-old mystery seems like a more interesting proposition than the other situations Marina is facing, so she accepts his challenge. But her search for a magical item of power reveals far more about Marina than she ever knew. Maybe enough to save the world. And even herself.

The Wrong Side of Paris, the final novel in Balzac’s The Human Comedy, is the compelling story of Godefroid, an abject failure at thirty, who seeks refuge from materialism by moving into a monastery-like lodging house in the shadows of Notre-Dame. Presided over by Madame de La Chanterie, a noblewoman with a tragic past, the house is inhabited by a remarkable band of men—all scarred by the tumultuous aftermath of the French Revolution—who have devoted their lives to performing anonymous acts of charity. Intrigued by the Order of the Brotherhood of Consolation and their uplifting dedication to virtuous living, Godefroid strives to follow their example. He agrees to travel—incognito—to a Parisian slum to save a noble family from ruin. There he meets a beautiful, ailing Polish woman who lives in great luxury, unaware that just outside her bedroom door her own father and son are suffering in dire poverty. By proving himself worthy of the Brotherhood, Godefroid finds his own spiritual redemption. This vivid portrait of the underbelly of nineteenth-century Paris, exuberantly rendered by Jordan Stump, is the first major translation in more than a century of Balzac’s forgotten masterpiece L’Envers de l’histoire contemporaine. Featuring an illuminating Introduction by Adam Gopnik, this original Modern Library edition also includes explanatory notes.
