Excerpt from The Works of Peter Pindar, Esq., Vol. 1 of 5: To Which Are Prefixed Memoirs of the Author's Life From Kingsbridge, he went to an uncle at Fowey, a medical practitioner of great abilities and reputation; and after completing his course of classical education, under the tuition of the Rev. Mr. Fisher, master of a grammar-school at Bodmin, his uncle sent him to France to acquire the French language. After a residence there of about a year, he returned to Fowey, and became a pupil of his uncle for seven years. During this time, while laying in a store of medical knowledge, such as books and practice afforded, his poetical turn, which appeared very early, prompted him to peruse works of general taste; and while he occasionally courted the muses, he also discovered a genius for drawing and painting, of which, it is well known, he is a critical judge. Some of his poetical efforts appeared in the periodical journals nearly fifty years ago, and many of his drawings and paintings are to be seen in the cabinets of those friends to whom he presented them. Those pursuits, however, were not very agreeable to his uncle, nor to his two paternal aunts, who, although women of solid intellects, and literary acquirements.
