Excerpt from The Works of John Moore, M.D, Vol. 7 of 7: With Memoirs of His Life and Writings My Dear Sommers, I Found your letter, as I expected, at the post-house at Bern, from whence I proceeded directly to Lausanne. You will not be surprised at my having made a short pilgrimage to this little town. You remember the person with whom I formerly deviated from the common track to this place. Poor -! I could not refuse this tribute to thy memory. I wandered yesterday among the mountains of this neighbourhood, more interesting to me from the recollections they excited, than even from the sublime beauties they exhibited. It was late before I returned. As I passed the stable I heard Ben singing - 'Hearts of oak are our ships, 'Hearts of oak are our men, ' &c. I went to bed thinking of Old England, and passed the night so agreeably with certain friends in London, that I was exceedingly vexed, when I awaked this morning, to find myself in Vevay. If the pleasing company in which I spent the night had not increased my impatience for setting out, I should have been tempted to a longer stay here, on purpose to witness the happiness of a young couple who are to be married within a few days. Excerpt from The Works of John Moore, M.D, Vol. 6 of 7: With Memoirs of His Life and Writings Mrs. Barnet, wife of Mr. George Barnet, who lived at no great distance from London, had been in town to put her daughter to a boarding school. She had taken a post-chaise, that the chariot might remain for the use of her husband, whose constant custom it was to drive out every day before dinner, to acquire an appetite, the only sensible reason which, in Mr. Barnet's opinion any man in easy circumstances could have for being at the trouble of exercise. As Mrs. Barnet returned from town, the post-chaise broke down in the middle of the road - a stage-coach came up at the instant that Mrs. Barnet and her maid had got safely out of the post-chaise; the coachman knew Mrs. Barnet, and his course being directly through a village contiguous to her husband's house he stopped and offered to set her down at her own door. - Mrs. Barnet perceiving that it would take a considerable time before the chaise could be mended, agreed to the coachman's proposal, and desired her maid to put a small bundle into the coach. Excerpt from The Works of John Moore, M.D, Vol. 5 of 7: With Memoirs of His Life and Writings, by Robert Anderson, M.D When the Romans, by the' superiority of their mili tary discipline, had subdued all the nations within their reach, they endeavoured to render them more civilized. Were we to give credit to some of their poets and histo rians, we should imagine that they undertook the first from the pure view of accomplishing the second. Yet no history, sacred or profane; furnishes examples of the ih habitants of One country entering forcibly into the terri tories of another, from the mere impulse of benevolence. It is therefore probable that the Romans were influenced by the same kind of good-will to the people they conquer. Ed, that the Spaniards were to the Mexicans, and the European traders on the coast of Guinea are to the ne._ groes.
