The language of the originators defines reality, every word warping the world to fit its meaning. Its study transforms the mind and body, and is closely guarded by stodgy, paranoid academics. These hidebound men don't trust many students with their secrets, especially not women, and more especially not "madwomen." Polymede and her lover Erishti believe they've made a discovery that could blow open the field's unexamined assumptions, and they're ready to face expulsion to make their mark. Of course, if they're wrong, the language will make its mark on them instead...in Ruthanna Emrys's stunning, dark fantasy story, The Word of Flesh and Soul. Have you ever asked yourself what changed when you were "born again?" You look in the mirror and see the same reflection - your body hasn't changed. You find yourself acting the same and yielding to those same old temptations - that didn't seem to change either. So you wonder, Has anything really changed? The correct answer to that question is foundational for receiving from God. If you lack this basic understanding, you'll forever ask yourself doubt-filled questions like: "How could God love somebody like me?" and "How can I possibly expect to receive anything from the Lord? I don't deserve it, I'm not good enough!" Spirit, Soul, and Body will help you eliminate those and other doubt-filled questions that destroy your faith. If you have trouble receiving from God, this is a must-read!

Augustine, the man with upturned eye, with pen in the left hand, and a burning heart in the right (as he is usually represented), is a philosophical and theological genius of the first order, towering like a pyramid above his age, and looking down commandingly upon succeeding centuries. He had a mind uncommonly fertile and deep, bold and soaring; and with it, what is better, a heart full of Christian love and humility. He stands of right by the side of the greatest philosophers of antiquity and of modern times. We meet him alike on the broad highways and the narrow footpaths, on the giddy Alpine heights and in the awful depths of speculation, wherever philosophical thinkers before him or after him have trod. As a theologian he is facile princeps, at least surpassed by no church father, schoolman, or reformer. With royal munificence he scattered ideas in passing, which have set in mighty motion other lands and later times. He combined the creative power of Tertullian with the churchly spirit of Cyprian, the speculative intellect of the Greek church with the practical tact of the Latin. He was a Christian philosopher and a philosophical theologian to the full.

Visionary theologian and award-winning author Matthew Fox challenges traditional perceptions of good and evil by offering a new theology that lays the groundwork for a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In this revised edition with a luminous foreword by Deepak Chopra and a new preface that brings the book up to date with the cataclysmic events of the new millennium, Fox illustrates how, contrary to mainstream church doctrine, flesh is the grounding of spirit. Fox argues that our culture has concentrated far too much on transgressions of the flesh while failing to take into account its sacredness. Artfully weaving together the wisdom of East and West, he considers Thomas Aquinas's definition of sin as "misdirected love" and applies parallels between the Eastern teachings of the seven chakras and the Western teachings of the seven capital sins. Fox explains how the chakras teach us to direct the love-energies we all possess and proposes seven positive precepts for living a full and spirited life. He invites us to change the way we think about sin and asserts that we can combat and transform evil through love, generosity, letting go, and creativity. Crafting a blueprint for social change, Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh points the way toward a deeper and more compassionate way to live while eloquently revealing the means to confront evil both within and without. Astounding revelations from a simple story of a woman, a man (Jesus), a well, 3 cities and a rich man. Written from the perspectives of the dimensions of which God and man are comprised, Spirit, Soul and Body, this simple story reveals the complexity of what's hidden in plain sight when observed from these 3 perspectives. These approaches may cause you to observe life and your own through new eyes. Not only were there spiritual observations but Jesus used this text to address Mental Health, Religion, Financial and Social and Political ideologies then and now. The Word (Bible) is God's inspired Word made 'flesh' and so it is too subject to Spirit, Soul and Body in its analysis and interpretation. It informs how we show up in the world and drives how we interact with it, if we choose to do so at all. I hope that you're intrigued to experience what's hidden beneath the innocuous layers in this unassuming chapter of John 4. You'll be pleasantly surprised and delighted! You should have this in your library and you'll want to share with friends and family.

There is an untold war we fight daily. It's our flesh (spirit, soul, worldliness, fear) and the Spirit. Words that are used in the Bible to describe our relationship with the Spirit include: hostility toward God, enmity, war against the Spirit, lust against one another, death, friendship with the world, temptation and deception. To win the war, we must replace the flesh with, and by, the Spirit of Christ. This study exposes the enemy of our soul. It is so important to understand the Spirit and flesh, but please don't just read this without reading the next two studies: "PUT ON the LORD JESUS Christ" and "WALK in the SPIRIT." Putting on the Lord Jesus Christ helps us understand the finished work of the cross and how to appropriate it for God's glory. Walking in the Spirit empowers us to become overcomers in Him, to walk the Christian walk of faith in the fruit of the Spirit. Scripture explains Scripture. So each lesson herein is a paragraph or two of scripture, in context, sorted by theme, where the words "flesh" and/or Spirit" (and their various synonyms) appear in the same paragraph; followed by four questions. Each Scripture is in context, but it's best if you also read what surrounds these verses. We suggest you start by reading the Gospel message under the heading, Start Here. We cannot discern Spirit from flesh without knowing Jesus and responding to the Good News. Also included herein is Appendix A - Small Group Facilitation Guide with step-by-step instructions to help homegroup and Bible study leaders host interactive meetings. Plus Appendix B - Sample Answers is an example of how one might answer the questions, particularly the first time. Now, let's get ready to discern and distinguish between the Spirit and flesh! The follow up to this study is called, "PUT ON the LORD JESUS Christ" which helps believers understand and then appropriate the finished work of the cross. We also recommend the one after that to complete the series, "WALK in the SPIRIT." This study reminds us how to be overcomers and how to walk the Christian walk in the fruit of the Spirit. For all you songwriters interested in worship song content, consider the songwriter version of this booklet, "DISCERNING SPIRIT and flesh (Songwriters' Series)." The scriptures are virtually the same ones used in this book, except that they are followed by different questions and helpful hints to inspire the writing of upwardly focused worship songs. DISCERNING SPIRIT and flesh (Teachers Series) is available for pastors and teachers who create their own inspirational, comprehensive, theme-based, Bible sermon series. The Scriptures are the same, but with different research suggestions for sermon preparation. The questions guide students and teacher to focus in on actions that are in the Truth, use Scripture to explain Scripture, encourage everyone to KNOW God better and be doers of the Word. So that the Word of God will correct, reproof, train and equip believers to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Thank you for studying the discerning of Spirit and flesh!
