Excerpt from The Western Farmer of America The golden rule for successful trading is "to buy in the cheapest and sell in the dearest market." Strange to say, the American farmer * reverses this rule. He sells in the cheapest and buys in the dearest market. For what he raises he gets a lower price, and for what he consumes he pays a higher price, than the land-tillers get and pay in any other country in the world. This is a very singular state of things, and is well worth thorough examination. While the Western farmer himself neither receives nor seeks any legislative "protection," he is compelled by law to supply his wants, not from the cheapest sources, but from certain privileged establishments to which he has to pay extravagant prices. While he requires no State subvention, because his occupation is of itself a profitable one, he is heavily taxed to support unprofitable manufactures in the Eastern States, and has to make good their losses out of his profits. Excerpt from The American Farmer The history, present problems and probable future evolution of the American farmer are to a large extent unique. Nevertheless he is a part of the great social development of his age to 'a greater extent than the farmers of any other nation past or present. These facts render the voluminous European literature on the agrarian question of little value to the student of American agricultural problems save as it deals with the most general phases of the subject. European conditions are still largely influenced by the survivals of feudalism. The great estates trace their origin to this social stage. Hundreds of details affecting the present relation of land lord and tenant descend from the days of lord and serf. Excerpt from Reply to Augustus Mongredien's Appeal to the Western Farmer of America: Showing the Prosperity of America Under Protection and the Decline of England Under Her So-Called Free-Trade System Are these statements true or are they false We have seen that there is no reliance on your figures or statements so far as the number of our farmers and the four hundred millions of dollars are concerned. Let us now examine these last statements and see how much truth there is in them, and first that the Western farmer neither receives nor seeks any legislative protection and if the Western farmer gets no protection then the Eastern farmer gets none, for there is no discrimination between one farmer and another. Excerpt from The American Farmer, Vol. 8: March 25, 1826 Dear Sir - In answer to your circular, I would oh serve, that I should not have presumed to furnish matter for a volume of the Memoirs of the Board, had it not been asserted, that any facts, however simple, would be considered valuable. I have carefully watched the progress Of improve ment in agriculture, in order to derive benefit from any system of cultivation, new and useful, which might be proposed. Although many improvements in the business of husbandry have been suggested, which would no doubt be of advantage to the farm ing interest, were they reduced to practice, yeti shall speak of but one, which I consider the most prominent, and that deserving the greatest atten tion; and which, if generally introduced, would save to the farmers of this state, annually, many millions.
