Excerpt from The Changed Cross, and Other Religious Poems The editor and compiler of The Changed Cross, and Other Religious Poems, the late Anson D. F. Randolph, was also the publisher of the volume. The initial poem was identified with the early history of his publishing house, and, with the exception of one or two prose volumes, the issue of this poem, printed separately, constituted his first publishing venture. As I recall the circumstances related to me by my father, he had, in looking over the religious papers, been attracted to a poem printed anonymously under the title of The Changed Cross. It appealed to his judgment as worthy of a more permanent form than that of a fugitive newspaper publication, and he printed the poem, first as a leaflet, and subsequently in a little volume containing some twenty other poems which he had selected from various sources. This little volume had from the beginning a remarkable career, and the editor found himself interested in gathering together a number of other poems similar in trend of thought and character, and in adding them to the original collection. The volume as now printed contains certain later additions, including a few poems selected from Mr. Randolph's volume of Verses. Mr. Randolph was always interested in emphasizing the undenominational character of his compilation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Charing Cross: And Other Poems of the Period Youth, by the stupendous sacrifice which it has been called upon to make, will enter into a great inheritance of Liberty. Martyrdom is often the forerunner of Freedom. But there is a short sightedness in some elderly persons which has enabled them to behold only the glory and gladness of Youth marching down the Valley of the Shadows. True vision has revealed under the radiant faces the tremor of deep emotion. Youth has suffered and been penalized for the very qualities it possesses, and when it returns it will find a voice to express its experience. Youth, which has saved the world, will demand the right to reconstruct it. The chaos that has broken its ranks marked the close of the ascendancy of political tradition, which to day is utterly discredited. Vision, which is Youth, has triumphed. A much-anticipated follow-up to Nothing More to Lose, this is only the second poetry collection translated into English from a vital voice of Arabic literature. “We drag histories behind us,” the Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish writes in Exhausted on the Cross, “here / where there’s neither land / nor sky.” In pared-down lines, brilliantly translated from the Arabic by Kareem James Abu-Zeid, Darwish records what Raúl Zurita describes as “something immemorial, almost unspeakable”—a poetry driven by a “moral imperative” to be a “colossal record of violence and, at the same time, the no less colossal record of compassion.” Darwish’s poems cross histories, cultures, and geographies, taking us from the grime of modern-day Shatila and the opulence of medieval Baghdad to the gardens of Samarkand and the open-air prison of present-day Gaza. We join the Persian poet Hafez in the conquered city of Shiraz and converse with the Prophet Mohammad in Medina. Poem after poem evokes the humor in the face of despair, the hope in the face of nightmare.

Excerpt from The Vision of the Eucharist: And Other Poems To Cyri, and Willie. The father's craft I know not as I would; - If childhood we must keep true men to be, So more of sonship must our Father see In those who share with Him in fatherhood. My boys, you have one Father Who is good, Who loves His children unforsakingly; Your home His Bosom is, your one roof-tree The God-revealing, Christ-uplifting Rood. Poor verses are the best that I can make, To higher thoughts I can but point the way, And yet, perchance, just for a father's sake, Your love may prize them on a coming day. This hope, my sons, your father s heart inspires That brighter far than his may burn your altar-fires. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Lay of the Southern Cross: And Other Poems Should you be curious to know, dear Reader, why this Poem was written, it is no conceit, but the honest truth to say, that I was impelled to write it. I might almost say, I could not help it. I undertook in February, 1886. By desire of those whose request was an honour and a command, the task of writing the History of the Church of New Zealand, * and in my preparation for the work became simply enamoured of the wondrous tale of the evangeliza tion of the country, which may be described as a Religious Romance. The more I read, the more my admiration grew, until at length it broke out in song. I communicated my secret to very few; for I was afraid lest my enthusiasm should fail, or grow cold. But it was not so; on the contrary, the work became more and more a comfort to me, and a support under severe mental trials and bodily illness. It has never been a hindrance to my duties; for it became my chief refreshment. I very seldom sat down to elaborate any portion of it; for I composed almost the whole of it in the course of my walks, or when I was dressing, or on wet days, as I walked up and down for exercise and the results were committed to paper as opportunity offered. But why publish it, you may ask? Well, I humbly hope that this, and the other shorter poems, which help to make up this volume, and which have been written under similar circumstances, on various occasions in the course of nearly half a lifetime, may be accepted, through the dear Lord Jesus Christ, as a thank-offering to our Heavenly Father, and be made use of by Him, as He knows best, for the good of His Church.
