This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, construction engineers, and others interested in economical methods for recontstructing portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. Information is provided on the processes and procedures used by a number of states in using PCC pavement as aggregate in reconstructed concrete pavement. Since 1975 a number of state highway agencies have reconstructed concrete pavements using the old PCC as aggregate in the new pavement. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the processes used on various projects in several states, giving details of construction procedures, as well as test results on various properties of the recycled aggregates and the resultant concrete.

The recycling of portland cement concrete pavements (PCCP) can help alleviate any material disposal problems during construction, especially in urban areas and reduce the consumption or importation of virgin aggregate into aggregate poor areas. Two test sections using the coarser fraction from the original crushed PCCP were placed on K-7 in 1985. One section incorporated a recycled base and standard PCCP construction; another section was designed as a recycled base and recycled PCCP. Two other sections were control sections constructed with regular aggregate.

Use of recycled aggregates in portland cement concrete (PCC) can offer benefits associated with both economy and sustainability. Recycled brick masonry aggregate (RBMA) can be used as a 100% replacement for conventional coarse aggregate in concrete that exhibits acceptable mechanical properties for use in structural and pavement elements (Cavalline, 2012). Recycled brick masonry aggregate concrete (RBMAC) is currently not used in any type of construction in the United States. However, use of RBMAC could become a viable construction strategy as the popularity of sustainable building practices increases. Although some researchers have studied RBMAC in the laboratory, minimal research on full-scale installations has been performed to evaluate the constructability concerns associated with its use, the performance of which is highly influenced by the relatively low unit weight and high absorption of the RBMA. A single-source demolition site was used to provide recycled clay bricks which were crushed and graded into RBMA. Material properties of RBMA from this source were compared to material properties of previously developed RBMA and to the concrete paving specifications of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Preliminary and final RBMAC mixtures were designed for use in a test pavement as part of this study, and laboratory test results were compared to values from previously developed RBMAC mixtures. The RBMAC test pavement, along with a control section of conventional PCC, was constructed within the access roadway of a local industry in order to allow researchers to identify and address concerns related to construction with this material, and to evaluate both early age and long-term performance of RBMAC in a full-scale pavement installation. Due to the novelty of RBMA and the associated risk and expense related to its use in a traditional batch plant, mobile volumetric concrete mixing trucks were used to facilitate construction of the test pavement. Challenges encountered during pre-construction and construction of the test pavement, experience with placing and finishing the RBMAC and control PCC pavement, and the performance of RBMAC in a pavement application are discussed. This study provides the results of both laboratory testing and a full-scale field installation of a new material that stakeholders can consider for use in future sustainable construction applications.

The review of current technology pertaining to the recycling of existing portland cement concrete pavements was conducted. The purpose was to assess the applicability of recycling to U.S. Air Force pavement rehabilitation work. Costs of alternatives were reduced to simple models for use in evaluating sensitivity to cost factors. A study of projects on which this technology was used identified aggregate cost and haul distance as key factors.

Concrete is the most used man-made material in the world since its invention. The widespread use of this material has led to continuous developments such as ultra-high strength concrete and self-compacting concrete. Recycled Aggregate in Concrete: Use of Industrial, Construction and Demolition Waste focuses on the recent development which the use of various types of recycled waste materials as aggregate in the production of various types of concrete. By drawing together information and data from various fields and sources, Recycled Aggregate in Concrete: Use of Industrial, Construction and Demolition Waste provides full coverage of this subject. Divided into two parts, a compilation of varied literature data related to the use of various types of industrial waste as aggregates in concrete is followed by a discussion of the use of construction and demolition waste as aggregate in concrete. The properties of the aggregates and their effect on various concrete properties are presented, and the quantitative procedure to estimate the properties of concrete containing construction and demolition waste as aggregates is explained. Current codes and practices developed in various countries to use construction and demolition waste as aggregates in concrete and issues related to the sustainability of cement and concrete production are also discussed. The comprehensive information presented in Recycled Aggregate in Concrete: Use of Industrial, Construction and Demolition Waste will be helpful to graduate students, researchers and concrete technologists. The collected data will also be an essential reference for practicing engineers who face problems concerning the use of these materials in concrete production.
