Under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is required to inventory lands and resources on a continuing basis. Aerial photography and other remote sensing techniques can be used to obtain inventory data and can be valuable tools for making management decisions. Aerial photos have proven especially useful in the management of riparian-wetland areas.

Riparian-wetland areas comprise a small portion of the total land base, yet they are some of the most productive and important ecosystems found in the United States. Riparian-wetland areas have vegetative or physical attributes reflective of water influence. Marshes, wet meadows, shallow swamps, estuaries, and lands adjacent to rivers, streams, and lakes are typical riparian-wetland areas. Characteristically, riparian-wetland areas have a greater diversity of plant and wildlife species and vegetation structure than adjoining ecosystems. Wildlife use riparian-wetland areas disproportionately more than any other type of habitat. Riparian-wetland areas are also important for their economic values and for diverse uses such as livestock production and recreation.

This annotated bibliography contains 1,905 citations from professional journals, symposia, workshops, proceedings, technical reports, and other sources. The intent of this compilation was to: (1) assemble, to the extent possible, all available and accessible publications relating to riparian management within a single source or document; (2) provide managers, field biologists, researchers, and others, a point of access for locating scientific literature relevent to their specific interest; and (3) provide, under one cover, a comprehensive collection of annotated publications that could dessiminate basic information relative to the status of our knowledge.
