When Emma Sky volunteered to help rebuild Iraq after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003, she had little idea what she was getting in to. Her assignment was only supposed to last three months. She went on to serve there longer than any other senior military or diplomatic figure, giving her an unrivaled perspective of the entire conflict. As the representative of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Kirkuk in 2003 and then the political advisor to US General Odierno from 2007-2010, Sky was valued for her knowledge of the region and her outspoken voice. She became a tireless witness to American efforts to transform a country traumatized by decades of war, sanctions, and brutal dictatorship; to insurgencies and civil war; to the planning and implementation of the surge and the subsequent drawdown of US troops; to the corrupt political elites who used sectarianism to mobilize support; and to the takeover of a third of the country by the Islamic State. With sharp detail and tremendous empathy, Sky provides unique insights into the US military as well as the complexities, diversity, and evolution of Iraqi society. The Unraveling is an intimate insider's portrait of how and why the Iraq adventure failed and contains a unique analysis of the course of the war. Highlighting how nothing that happened in Iraq after 2003 was inevitable, Sky exposes the failures of the policies of both Republicans and Democrats, and the lessons that must be learned about the limitations of power.

Bill Wilson studied in a number of fields including civil engineering, theology, philosophy, organisation theory, behavioural science and education. He has practiced professionally as a civil engineer; an ordained clergyman; a lecturer in adult higher education; and finally as a Principal of a Further and Higher Education College. Bill believes that all human beings behave and find fulfilment consistent with their inner 'world-view', that is, what we believe about the meaning and purpose of life and any 'god' who oversees it all. His early 'world-view' was that of classical Protestantism. But as his education developed and he engaged with the wider world he became unhappy with the expressions of faith passed down in the creedal formulations of the Church in favour of the bottom-up enquiry of ordinary people. For Bill, meaningful religion must address the issues on the minds of the population today, people who live in a rapidly changing world, rather than those living in the fixed static world of yesterday.

“The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes is a page-turning peek inside the glamour and brutality of life as a pop star. Sloan takes us on a wild ride through the world of music video shoots, expensive hotels, and arena tours—showing us the darkness that threatens just below the surface.” —Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones and The Six “I didn't know I was waiting for a smart, literary writer to craft a novel about the rise and fall of a teen star akin to Britney Spears until I discovered The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes. A witty, bright, hilarious—and at times devastating—read. I loved it." —Amanda Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters Cassidy Holmes isn't just a celebrity. She is “Sassy Gloss,” the fourth member of the hottest pop group America has ever seen. Hotter than Britney dancing with a snake, hotter than Christina getting dirrty, Gloss was the pop act that everyone idolized. Fans couldn't get enough of them, their music, and the drama that followed them like moths to a flame—until the group’s sudden implosion in 2002. And at the center of it all was Sassy Cassy, the Texan with a signature smirk that had everyone falling for her. But now she's dead. Suicide. The world is reeling from this unexpected news, but no one is more shocked than the three remaining Glossies. Fifteen years ago, Rose, Merry, and Yumi had been the closest to Cassidy, and this loss is hitting them hard. Before the group split, they each had a special bond with Cassidy—truths they told, secrets they shared. But after years apart, each of them is wondering: what could they have done? Told in multiple perspectives—including Cassidy herself—and different timelines, this is a behind-the-scenes look into the rise and fall of a pop icon, and a penetrating examination of the dark side of celebrity and the industry that profits from it.

The Unravelling is a gripping historical fiction set in Rhodesia, now named Zimbabwe, and the United Kingdom during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The novel depicts the military, political, and tribal intrigues that led to the country's collapse as its disenfranchised black population took up arms to break free from Rhodesia’s colonial past. You will meet two young men, Nick and Sipho, who have a deep love for the country of their birth and for its endangered elephant and rhino herds which are facing an existential threat from poaching. During the Rhodesian Bush War both men had served with distinction with the Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR) and had become stalwart brothers in arms After being demobilised from the RAR in July 1980, Nick goes to study in the UK where he falls in love with Rachel Dixon, the daughter of a controversial English businessman. Sipho remains in Zimbabwe. He is a patriot from the Ndebele nation. He loves his tribal heritage but loves his country more. Following the disbandment of the RAR he joins the new Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and serves it with distinction. However, despite such service he becomes the victim of shameful tribal discrimination by the ZNA hierarchy. Johannes du Toit, a callous white man and a deserter from the Rhodesian Light Infantry, flees Rhodesia in 1978 when his poaching activities are uncovered. He returns to Zimbabwe in 1981 to continue his nefarious activities. The four characters meet at Mhuka Ranch in southeast Zimbabwe in 1981, where a lethal encounter leaves three people dead. The truth of what happened on that fateful day remains unknown to the public but will be revealed to the reader.

A novel which takes you on a roller-coaster ride inside the mind of its eponymous hero. A story both contemporary (set in the 2010’s) and nostalgic, funny, quirky and sometimes tragic. A sensitive hero, beneath his ‘blokey’ exterior, and his attempts to find ‘true’ happiness. With just twelve weeks to go before his wedding to ophthalmic surgeon, Jo, thirty year old drug rep, Michael, is panicking. If only he’d found the courage to tell Jo he hadn’t proposed when she believed he had, but Jo’s a determined woman, and besides, the truth would have made her unhappy, and making others unhappy is something Michael has tried to avoid for as long as he can remember. Michael is only too aware that this approach to life hasn’t brought him much happiness, earning him to date not only a wedding he’s dreading, but an unwanted career, ghosts that haunt his past and present, and just lately, recurring nightmares featuring characters from Star Wars (the original trilogy of course). Add to this his future mother-in-law’s farcical wedding preparations, an aunt who’s mad as a box of frogs, a wannabe cowboy for a father, a sister who’s slowly reducing the wildlife population of Australia, the realisation that he doesn’t love his fiancée enough to marry her, and the indefinite detention of the woman he really does love (for stabbing her partner before eating microwaved paella), it’s hardly surprising that Michael is teetering on the brink. When his only hope of survival requires making a lot of people (plus one determined ghost) very unhappy, what’s he going to do?

Unraveling the Double Helix covers the most colorful period in the history of DNA, from the discovery of "nuclein" in the late 1860s to the publication of James Watson's The Double Helix in 1968. These hundred years included the establishment of the Nobel Prize, antibiotics, x-ray crystallography, the atom bomb and two devastating world wars—events which are strung along the thread of DNA like beads on a necklace. The story of DNA is a saga packed with awful mistakes as well as brilliant science, with a wonderful cast of heroes and villains. Surprisingly, much of it is unfamiliar. The elucidation of the double helix was one of the most brilliant gems of twentieth century science, but some of the scientists who paved the way have been airbrushed out of history. James Watson and Francis Crick solved a magnificent mystery, but Gareth Williams shows that their contribution was the last few pieces of a gigantic jigsaw puzzle assembled over several decades. The book is comprehensive in scope, covering the first century of the history of DNA in its entirety, including the eight decades that have been neglected by other authors. It also explores the personalities of the main players, the impact of their entanglement with DNA, and what unique qualities make great scientists tick.

“Searing, searching, finally scorching. Think Making a Murderer via Patricia Highsmith: an elegant kaleidoscope novel that refines and combines multiple perspectives until its subject is brought into indelible, tragic focus.” —A. J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window “Pitch-black and superbly written.” —Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in Cabin 10 “Top-notch grip lit…incredibly brilliant.” —Marian Keyes, New York Times bestselling author Oliver Ryan has the perfect life. Elegant and seductive, he wants for nothing, sharing a lovely home with his steadfast wife, Alice, who illustrates the award-winning children’s books that have brought him wealth and fame. Until one evening, after eating the dinner Alice has carefully prepared, Oliver savagely assaults her and leaves her for dead. But why? The people who know Oliver can only speculate about the reasons behind his brutal act: his empty-headed mistress Moya, vain and petulant; Veronique, the French chatelaine who tragically lost everything the summer she employed him in her vineyard; Alice’s friend Barney, who has nursed an unrequited love for her since childhood; Oliver’s college pal Michael, struggling with voiceless longings that have shamed him for years. What none of them understands is the dark secret that lies behind his immaculate façade. The revelations that come to light as the layers of Oliver’s past are peeled away are as brutal as his singular act of violence. His decades of careful deception have masked a life irrevocably marked by abandonment, envy, and shame—and as the details of that life are laid bare, Oliver discovers that outrunning his demons is harder than it looks. With its insight into the mind of a psychopath emerging from the wreckage of his own misbegotten past, Unraveling Oliver is a chilling page-turner, brilliantly crafted and unexpectedly moving, by a stunning new voice in fiction. Liz Nugent "presents a fresh look at a man hiding his violent personality in this intense character study" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). As powerful as Patricia Highsmith’s unforgettable noir classic, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Unraveling Oliver will enthrall you from its mesmerizing opening line to its equally shocking last page.
