There never was a more exciting Christmas than the first one. Oddly enough, however, the complete, historical account of that first Christmas is seldom told. There are forgotten chapters buried in scriptural records which the pageants at Christmas time fail to relate. The purpose of this writing is to tell the whole story the way history has preserved it. “The Real Story of Christmas” has been enjoyed in thousands of homes for over half a century and continues to enlighten and enrich with a greater understanding of the amazing events leading up to our Savior’s birth.

This “sweet tale” of a Vermont family’s annual trek to New York City to sell trees is “a cross between It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol” (USA Today). Every holiday season for nearly twenty years, Billy Romp, his wife, and their three children have spent nearly a month living in a tiny camper and selling Christmas trees on Jane Street in New York City. They arrive from Vermont the day after Thanksgiving and leave just in time to make it home for Christmas morning—and for a few weeks they transform a corner of the Big Apple into a Frank Capra-esque small town alive with heartwarming holiday spirit. A lovely, lovingly illustrated little gem of a book, this delightful tenth anniversary edition of a beloved Christmas classic tells the poignant, inspiring story of an unforgettable family that brings the Christmas spirit to life on a street corner in Manhattan and the warm, wide circle of friends who have welcomed them to the neighborhood. Christmas on Jane Street is about the transformative power of love—love of parent and child, of merchant and customer, of stranger and neighbor. The ideal Christmas story, it is about the lasting and profound difference that one person can make to a family and one family can make to a community. “A heartwarming story”—Newsday “A touching tale fragrant with the season . . . a special treat for those who love Christmas trees.” —Tampa Tribune

This delightful Christmas story is in the ilk of Its a Wonderful Life. Taking place over the weekend following Thanksgiving, it involves a young family in Ohio. Enjoy the twist and turns as they endure a blizzard, secrets, church duties, a special dinner, a terminal illness, irate parents, cultural acceptance and religious inclusion. But the main theme is a special relationship between a father and his daughter. For Destiny, everything in life is new. And she cant sit still for not understanding all that come into her young life. She has a mine like a sponge, which amazes her father. This is about the true meaning and purpose of Christmas and why it is celebrate by a third of the worlds population; including other cultures which celebrate some form of Christmas, and still other societies that have celebrations at this same time. The story reveals half the world observes a religious event honoring God in some form at this time of the year. Rather than teaching children about Santa bringing gifts to every child, they should be telling them the truth; which is, we give gifts to our children in celebration of what God has giving to us, -- The Greatest Gift ever given. Through our hard work we are able to purchase the gifts we give at Christmas. Why tell such a big lie to children and give the credit to this imaginary figure. Weve earned that credit. This story ends with a lesson for the entire world. Christmas is one of the greatest tools we have to bring the world together, if we include all peoples, everywhere.

The True Christmas Story is a simple retelling of the Nativity story, intended for two- to six-year-olds, to share the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ. Taken from the Gospel of St. Luke, young readers can begin to incorporate the True Christmas Story into their lives and holiday traditions celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. In my home growing up, every Christmas we had a tradition of reading the Christmas story. All families have different ways of celebrating Christmas, and Santa may or may not be a part of that. In my family, Santa brought one or two surprises every year, but he wasn't the focus of our holiday. I don't even remember when Santa faded away. I do remember making birthday cakes for Jesus, and singing Him Happy Birthday on Christmas Eve. And then every year on Christmas morning, my dad built a fire in the fireplace (in sunny San Diego where it was never needed) and before presents were opened we read the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke. We prayed as a family, thanking God for the greatest gift of all, baby Jesus. After celebrating the real reason for Christmas we could dive right into opening presents. Imagine my delight when I discovered the art of VS Sheridan. This retelling of the Christmas story is not meant to replace opening the Bible. But, when I saw her art, the first thing that ran through my mind was squealing children everywhere running with excitement to read the true story of Christmas. My prayer is that each child would have the true Christmas story as a tradition in their celebration... and Jesus a place in their heart. Merry Christmas! Dana S. Chisholm
