Excerpt from The True Grasses It is hoped also that the translation will thus be made more suitable for use as a text-book in our Agricultural Colleges, for which purpose the treatment of the structure, morphology, and physiology of grasses, given in detail and fully illustrated in Part I, renders the work especially well adapted. Those familiar with the German will notice that in translation occasional liberties have been taken with the original by the omission of unimportant matter, insertion of head-lines, etc. Except in the account of the Bambusese, all matter enclosed in brackets has been added by myself. A number of notes and observations have been added by Prof. Hackel, to whom the manuscript was submitted for revision and approval before being sent to the printers. Following the number of each genus there has been inserted, in parenthesis, its number in Bentham and Hooker's Genera Plantarum, facilitating reference to that work and at the same time showing the diversity between the systems of classification adopted. With few exceptions the illustrations are from electrotypes of the original woodcuts obtained from the German publisher, Wilhelm Engelmann, of Leipzig. The figures illustrating the spikes of the cereals were redrawn from the imprints in the original and reduced nearly one half by photo-engraving. Figures 3a and 91a are additions, while figures 45a, 75a, and 78 were drawn especially for the translation and appear here for the first time. Thanks are due Mr. Charles E.Smith, of Philadelphia, for his kind assistance with the proofs, and Dr. W. J. Beal, of Lansing, Michigan, and Mr. C. M. McClung, of Knoxville, Tennessee, for their interest in the progress of the work and material aid in its publication. In this new, complete Guide to Texas Grasses, Robert B. Shaw and the team at the Texas A&M University Institute of Renewable Natural Resources provide an indispensable reference to the world’s most economically important plant family. After discussing the impact of grass on our everyday lives as food, biofuels, land restoration, erosion control, and water become ever more urgent issues worldwide—the book then provides:a description of the structure of the grass plant;details of the classification and distribution of Texas grasses;brief species accounts;distributional maps;color photographs;plus black-and-white drawings of 670 grass species—native, introduced, and ornamental. Scientific keys help identify the grasses to group, genera, and species, and an alphabetized checklist includes information on: origin (native or introduced); longevity (annual or perennial);growth season (cool or warm season); endangered status;and occurrence (by ecological zone). A glossary, literature citations, and a quick index to genera round out the book. Guide to Texas Grasses is a comprehensive treatment of Texas grasses meant to assist students, botanists, ecologists, agronomists, range scientists, naturalists, researchers, extension agents, and others who work with or are interested in these important plants.

Excerpt from The Identification of Grasses by Their Vegetative Characters In this discussion the term grass is restricted entirely to those plants which botanists group in the family Gramineae or Poaceae and does not include the clovers and some other forage plants which are often classed agriculturally under the term a grass. The true grasses are recognizable by the following characters: Stems jointed, usually hollow; leaves in two ranks on opposite sides of the stem, each consisting of two parts, the blade, usually narrow and elon gated, and the sheath, or basal portion, tubular and enwrapping the stem, its margins free or rarely grown together; leaf nerves parallel; at the junction of the sheath and blade a small membranous appendage, the ligule, which is sometimes wanting.
