Excerpt from The True Christian Religion, Vol. 3: Containing the Universal Theology of the New Church Foretold by the Lord in Daniel VII, 13, 14 and in the Apocalypse XXI, 1, 2 God, consubstantial with the Father, who descended from the heavens and was incamated by the Holy Spirit from the virgin Mary; and in the Holy Spirit, Lord and vivifier, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, and who together with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified. In the Athanasian creed is the following: The Catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in'trinity, and the Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the person nor separating the substance. But as we are compelled by Christian verity to confess each person separately, God and Lord, SO are we for bidden by the Catholic religion to say three Gods or three Lords. That is, men may confess, but not say, three Gods and Lords; may not say so because religion forbids, but may confess them because the truth so dictates. This Athanasian creed was written out immediately after the holding of the Nicene Council, by one or more of those who had been pres ent, and it was also accepted as oecumenical or catholic. It is manifest from this that it was then decreed that three Di vine Persons from eternity should be acknowledged; and that although each Person singly by himself was God, still they ought not to be called three Gods and Lords, but one. This provocative series examines some of the great religions of the world, taking into account both similarities and differences with Mormonism - refuting common misconceptions, illuminating little-known practices, and exploring the theological underpinnings of the faith under study. Persons not of the LDS faith may be surprised to learn of doctrinal commonalities with the Latter-day Saints, while LDS readers will no doubt be fascinated by the degree to which they have misunderstood their brothers and sisters of other religious persuasions.

In this classic devotional, John Calvin urges readers to apply the Christian life in a balanced way to mind, heart, and hand. Rather than focusing on contemplative otherworldliness, the book stresses the importance of a devotedly active Christian life. In style and spirit, this book is much like Augustine's Confessions, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, or Thomas à Kempis's Imitation of Christ. However, its intense practicality sets it apart, making it easily accessible for any reader seeking to carry out Christian values in everyday life. Chapter themes include obedience, self-denial, the significance of the cross, and how we should live our lives today.

Explores ancient beliefs about life after death, highlighting the fact that the early Christians' belief about the afterlife belonged firmly on the Jewish spectrum, while introducing several new mutations and sharper definitions, forcing readers to view the Easter narratives not simply as rationalizations, but as accounts of two actual events: the empty tomb of Jesus and his "appearances." Simultaneous. Hardcover no longer available.

The Christian life, as Calvin describes it, is lived simultaneiously in the shadow of the cross and in the bright light of the resurrection. That the writer himself knew something of the cost of discipleship is clear from a consideration of his own experience.
