GRACE GREAT IN STRENGTH?SUBDUES SIN. RA CE subdues sin. Sin is strong and the law is strong, but the grace that comes through Jesus Christ is stronger than sin when invested even with the full strength of the law. When sin has done its utmost and carried us into the lowest depths of depravity we find something lower still. The grace of Christ that bringeth salvation has a depth beyond that into which sin has carried us. When it has taken us to the very ends of the earth, we find a length in the grace of Christ to reach us even there, and at the gates of Hell we may feel his grace grasping and subduing us as it grasped and subdued, in the days that are past, the sweet singer of Israel and the apostle of the Gentiles. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of God which passeth knowledge. And when it has wasted and ruined our noble frame, and has robbed us of all that made us beautiful, leaving us weak as withered grass, dead anddry as the bones in the valley of vision, it has not unfitted us for grace, nor placed us beyond its soul- quickening and soul-subduing power. Let us but touch the hem of Christ's garment from whom all saving virtue comes, and we are free and sin shall not have dominion over us. Before the grace of Christ sin is weakness, and its strength as a gossamer thread. a. Grace subdues sin with ease. When sin works and rages within us and is tempestuous, like an angry sea, and we are ready to be swallowed up by its raging lusts, grace subdues it with the ease with which Christ stilled the storm on the sea of Galilee, saying ' Peace be still, ' and there was a great calm. The history of the church is filled with stories. Stories of triumph, stories of defeat, stories of joy, and stories of sorrow. These stories are a legacy of God's faithfulness to His people. In this book, Dr. Stephen J. Nichols provides postcards from the church through the centuries. These snapshots capture the richness of Christian history with glimpses of fascinating saints, curious places, precious artifacts, and surprising turns of events. In exploring them, Dr. Nichols takes the reader on a lively and informative journey through the record of God's providence to encourage, challenge, and enjoy. This is our story--our family history. "THE CENTURIES OF CHURCH HISTORY GIVE US A LITANY OF GOD'S DELIVERANCES. GOD HAS DONE IT BEFORE, MANY TIMES AND IN MANY WAYS, AND HE CAN DO IT AGAIN. HE WILL DO IT AGAIN. AND IN THAT, WE FIND COURAGE FOR TODAY AND FOR TOMORROW."

An uplifting look at three famous and flawed fathers of the Christian church and how their lives can inspire us to fall in love with God and find the power to overcome our weaknesses. Augustine grappled with sexual passion. Martin Luther struggled to control his tongue. John Calvin fought the battle of faith with the world's weapons. Yet despite their failings, each man will always be remembered as a founding father to the Christian faith because of the messages they declared. And even with their deaths hundreds of years ago, their messages still speak today. John Piper explores each man's life, integrating Augustine's delight in God with Luther's emphasis on the Word and Calvin's exposition of Scriptures. Through their strengths and struggles, he teaches us how to better live today, for when we consider their lives, we behold the glory and majesty of God - and in that, find the power to overcome our weaknesses.

My own private opinion is that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and him crucified, unless you preach what now-a-days is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith, without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in his dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering, love of Jehovah: nor do I think we can preach the gospel, unless we base it upon the peculiar redemption which Christ made for his elect and chosen people; nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called, and suffers the children of God to be burned in the fires of damnation after having believed. Such a gospel I abhor. The gospel of the Bible is not such a gospel. We preach Christ crucified in a different fashion, and to all gainsayers we reply. "We have not so learned Christ." (Charles Spurgeon)
