The literature of college entrance requirements is very voluminous. A part of it is scientific, a large part purely opinion, and nearly all of it is popular. It is rather startling that such an important field as the articulation of secondary and higher education has been made so little the subject of scientific study. Although it is recognized that all colleges are not equal in ideals, equipment, or product, nevertheless all colleges (accredited or recognized as such by the proper authorities) are colleges, and the interest of this study is in American colleges as a whole rather than in a few leading institutions.
