Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 2 IN the preceding volume the political causes of the South African War were traced from the British acquisition of Cape Colony down to the ultimatum presented to the British Government by the Transvaal on October 9, 1899. The military antecedents of that war, and the narrative of the first three months of fighting, from the expiration of the ultimatum down to the battle of Colenso, form the contents of the present volume. Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 4 The composition of the present volume differs from that of its predecessors to the extent that, whereas in the former volumes the actual narrative as it, appeared, though based on the contributions of various collaborators, was mainly written by myself, I have in the present case confined myself strictly to the purely editorial task of criticism and suggestion. The volume as it stands is the work of Mr. Basil Williams, and he is responsible alike for the accuracy of the detailed facts recorded and for the judgments and criticisms expressed. This delegation of a difficult, laborious, and responsible task has made it possible to publish, within a year of its predecessor, a volume which it has taken fully two years of continuous effort to write. First published in 1900, this authoritative history of the Second Anglo-Boer War is a comprehensive and detailed account of one of the most important conflicts of the late nineteenth century. Drawing on official documents and reports, as well as interviews with key figures on both sides of the conflict, Tallboy and Amery provide a vivid and compelling narrative of the battles, campaigns, and political struggles that shaped the outcome of the war. This book is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of imperialism, colonialism, and twentieth-century warfare. Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1: 1899-1900 IN the present volume I have endeavoured to set before the reader a full account of the relations between the Imperial Government and the Dutch Republics in South Africa, of the causes that led up to the final crisis, and of the protracted negotiations which preceded the outbreak of the great South African War. No study of the military operations them selves can be complete without at least some slight knowledge of the political situation of which the war was the outcome. The ultimatum, the invasion of Natal, the rebellion in Cape Colony, the part played in the war by the Uitlander corps, the stubbornness of the resistance offered by the Boers, the annexation of their territories, are all matters which can only be understood in the light of previous events. This, and the fact that no adequate connected account of all the circumstances leading up to the war, has as yet appeared, will, I venture to think, he sufiicient justification for prefixing this introductory volume to the series of volumes which are to narrate the course of the military operations. Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 6: With Maps, Plans, and Photogravure Portraits I now take my leave of the History of the South African War. It is just nine years since I wrote the opening pages. Had I known then how laborious the task would prove, I freely confess that I should probably not have had the courage to embark upon it. I have grown very weary of it at intervals. But now the work is done I regret none of the labour which it has cost. To me it has been a wonderful lesson not only in the supremely interesting business of war, but in the whole Imperial problem of which the struggle in South Africa has been but a single phase. My only hope is that I have succeeded in some measure, however small, in making that lesson plain to those who have the patience to study these volumes.
